With 10th changing/removing the restrictions on, and even the concept of, the Force Organisation Chart you won't be limited to a certain number of Elite choices for example but will still be limited to how many iterations of each unit you can take.

So it depends how many units/models you want to take in total and which edition you're building for.

If you want 9 of them in 9th Edition then putting them in 2 units leaves you an additional Elite Slot for another unit, in 10th you may as well have 3 units of 3.

If you run 3 marine units, 2 need to die before they start testing for moral; 66% of the unit.

In a 5 Marine unit, 3, or 60%, need to die before you start testing.

In a 6 Marine unit, you also test at 3 dead marines, or 50%.

2x3 Marine units seem more resistant to moral, and you can never lose more than 3 models to a single powerful shooting attack. And for both units to need to test, you would need to lose 2 models from each, or 4 models out of 6 in total.

I think big squads look very cool, but the rules seem to favor odd numbered squads and small squads.
