Karhedron
I normally varnish my models after painting to protect them. Normally I use either Testors dullcote or satin lacquer depending on the finish I am after. The problem is that both of these seem to kill the shine on metallic paints. I have just finished my new Dante and I would like to protect the paint finish but I don't want to dull the golden lustre. Does anyone have any advice for how to keep him shining? Firedrake Cordova
There's a few gloss varnishes out there - probably "the obvious one" is Vallejo Metal Colour varnish, which seems to get decent reviews. I've used Vallejo's gloss polyurethane varnish over their satin polyurethane varnish (to correct a mistake) without problems, too. Grotsmasha
I use GW's Munitorum Varnish spray, but when I really NEED something to keep it's shine, I go back over the spray with brush on 'Ard Coat form GW. Borbarad
For gold I use GW’s Storm Shield. It dulls the gold. But afterwards I apply little Mystic Gold (by Greenstuff World) to guve it the shine back. Karhedron
OK, so maybe some flavour of gloss varnish and then go over the non-metallic areas with a matt varnish to kill the shine is the way to go? Firedrake Cordova
That sounds like a logical approach. It looks like there are some areas you could mask off with cling film (the axe, base) when spraying - don't know if that makes life any easier, as you could probably spray those?
