Hey all.

Been out of the game a good while due to all the bloat that started in 6th.

Thinking of putting a 1k points list of Primaris together when 10th comes around, but not really sure where to start.

Is list building still the same, i.e. each unit costs X, and you follow a force org chart?

Are there any good value boxes to start primaris? I don't like the skinny ankle models at all, and they appear to make up the bulk of the combat patrol.

I will also add that I plan to do a codex army, as I find the non-codex SM armies a bit boring, ironically.

All of the models in all of the Combat Patrols are available to most Space Marine armies, and what makes them Space Wolves, or Dark Angels are those boxes include that chapters decal sheet and upgrade sprue.

Alternatively eBay typically has the individual squads from the Combat Patrols available for ... reasonablle ... discount over buying direct from GW. We're currently on the horizon for 10th Ed. (late June) at this stage, and with it comes a new starter box. It will be a much bigger investment, but if you can find a friend that wants the Tyranid half, maybe you could split the cost, or buy one each and double up.

As for list building Force Organisation charts are gone, kind of. You now choose "Detachments" which have their own unique requirements and limits from the Force Org chart. An army list usually consists of several Detachments.

We're all still learning about how building armies and force org charts will work in 10th. But points are still a thing.

All the boxes are good values for models. The Leviathan box for 10th would also be a good starting place.

What are skinny ankle models? I can think of anything that has skinny ankles.

I think they are called Infiltrators. Tbf it's more the lower legs that are skinny than the ankles.

The other box worth looking at is Strike Force Agastus. This contains a nice mix of mostly new units.

Primaris Lieutenant (although you can easily run him as a Captain if you wish)

5 Heavy Intercessors (chunky Troops with T5 and 3 wounds each)

10 Desolators (Primaris heavy weapons infantry. The missile launchers look a bit OTT but they bring a lot of firepower)

Brutalis Dreadnought (melee orientated killing machine although it can also pack a pair of Multimeltas meaning it is no slouch at vapourising tough targets from a distance).

I recommend taking a look for online FLGs sites (or a local FLG if you have on) that may still have some of the boxed Space Marine Strike Forces which were a limited release earlier this year. I recommend taking a look for March of Iron if you like dreadnoughts or either of the Scions of Macragge or Warforged Strike Forces if you like more infantry. Each was themed for a particular chapter, but as Grotsmasha noted earlier, that just means they come with particular upgrade sprues and decals.

A less expensive option would be the Space Marine Boarding Patrol. It came out more recently and should be easier to find. It leans more towards close combat though.

Lastly, if you are okay with ending up with some Necrons (to keep or resell), the 9th Edition Elite Edition and Command Edition can be very competitively priced by 3rd party sellers. For example, I often see the Elite Edition for 85-90USD and it comes with 5 Assault Intercessors, 3 Outriders and a Primaris Captain, and 10 Necron Warriors, 3 Scarab Swarms, 3 Skorpekh Destroyers, and an Overlord.

I haven't seen this before, but it might be a good shout, as I am looking at maybe doing my force as Star Phantoms, so some heavy troops might fit the theme well.

I do remember strike forces being released. Do you know if there's anywhere to look at their contwnts without heading down to the FLGS?

Yep, here are some links to where I found them in stock with a superficial Google search and a list of their contents.

March of Iron - 1x Iron Father Ferrios, 1x Primaris Techmarine, 2x Redemptor Dreadnoughts, 10x Primaris Intercessors

Scions of Macragge - 1x Marneus Calgar, 2x Victrix Honor Guard, 1x Tigurius, 3x Bladeguard Veterans, 10x Primaris Intercessors, 10x Primaris Hellblasters

Warforged Strike Force - 1x Adrax Agatone, 3x Primaris Eradicators, 3x Primaris Aggressors, 20x Primaris Intercessors

The space marine boarding patrol if you can track it down would be a good option for a base forced/around 500pts of models

(6 in stock at darkspere that can be added to the cart but if you click the link directly for the product you get an error page so may be worth a call with them if you were interested)

Captain in gravis armour

5 Heavy Intercessors

10 Assault Intercessors

For combat patrols, the Dark Angels one doesn't include any models that skipped leg day

Chaplain

5 Intercessors

3 Interceptors

1 Redemptor Dread

Only issue with this is the chapter specific decals/upgrade sprues but you can probably sell those on/trade to get back some of the cost.

Obviously the value of these is only there if the have models you want.

And to add, you can currently get a Redemptor dread via Imperium magazine for about £27 instead of the RRP of £45 (issues 86,87,88 at 8.99 each)

Great answers already - the main place to start will be with the model you think are the coolest - you'll always use them in games.

The main change to 'normal' is that the force organisation chart is gone. You can use what you like, but no more than 3x of one unit, or 6x of a battleline (troops) unit, which is pretty much how it always was, just without the troops tax.

You'll probably still want some troops as they're better at holding objectives, but they're by no means neccessary now.

The Leviathan boxed set is a great place to start, as it has both the rules, probably a 1000pt marine army, and the SM side breaks down into a combat patrol if you want to try out the new small scale game rules. You also get a bonus army in the nids, which you can probably sell for half the cost of the box.
