I think this is what FW used originally:

Otherwise, all I couldn't find anything other than the Khorne Red base paint recipe and the Flesh Tearers contrast paint. recipe.

Perfect, thank you for such a comprehensive answer, I think I'll use the recipe for Chitinous Armour as that's exactly what I'd like to achieve (and clarifies what to use as a glaze/highlight on the Gal Vorbak [and Corvus Black] basecoat). Thanks again!!

That Chitinous Armour recipe will look very nice :smile: 

 

I had a dig through the older GW painting tutorials, and it looks like they used Mephiston Red for the Betrayal at Calth boxed set, but I think the scheme above will look better :smile:

I don't believe 'Eavy Metal has done any official color schemes for the Horus Heresy. Of course the 'Eavy Metal team has painted 30k models but all of those were done in the 40k style and not the HH. The recipe jaxom posted is one FW has used and it's how I paint my Word Bearers (with some slight modifications).
