Captain Idaho
I must admit when I first saw his rules I zeroed in on the Precision shots for his weapons and the damage 1 on his weapon and thought he'd struggle to be an assassin. This was my first foray into 40K 10th and I was going for raw data as is traditional to the game and misses the "extras". Looking at him with a renewed understanding of the game, I'm happy to say I was wrong about him. Indeed, he's got a selection of rules that combine to make him possibly the single best choice in the whole Index. Hyperbole? It's possible. I've done it before, allegedly. I cannot confirm nor deny. My reasoning for this outlandish claim is probably needed at this point then, regardless. Well starting with Lone Operative, we have a flexible character fully capable of going where he pleases to support anyone you like, which combines well with Deep Strike. You have some Deathmarks dropping somewhere? Put him behind them. Have some Flayed Ones screening the front of the line? Hexmark can skirmish with them. Couple of Warriors blobs and a Doomstalker? Hexmark. We'll circle back to Lone Operative in a minute. Moving on to their abilities we have a free Overwatch. Sure it's ok, hitting on 2s and you've already shot in your turn so that's 12 shots in a battle turn, which is cool. But we can do more; his Multi threat eliminator enables him to shoot freely at anything in range and line of sight each and every time a friendly Necrons unit is shot at. This can really rack up just how many shots you can crank out, making up for the lack of damage 2 and then some. The final piece of the puzzle is probably the reason this model is the single best model in the Codex when combined with its abilities. Enhancements. Notably the Sovereign Coronal. With this expensive enhancement you can grant any Necrons unit, including vehicles and C'tan shards, the capability to count as being led by a character. You know where I'm going with this! Firstly you can give +1 to hit to vehicles and units not normally led by characters, or those you just didn't have points to add a character to. Flayed Ones with a 2+ to hit anyone? This is immensely good, but doesn't stop there. When applying Strategums to those units they now count as being led by a character. Now your Monolith or Doomsday Cannon can use Protocol of the Conquering Tyrant at full range, rerolling full wounds, or your Flayed Ones hitting on 2s at S5 and 5 attacks each, twin linked thank you madam. Brilliant stuff. So all in, this versatile and cheap character can end up supporting your army with leadership bonuses or just buckets of dice worth of return fire. I happily recommend this guy, giving him 4 and a half Scarabs out of 5. Nap time Necron
I think taking two will be a standard choice in most competitive list. A coronal on one most likely but just the amount of return fire they put out is kinda silly. With how durable our units are, you will often find the opponent ends up taking more damage than you by shooting your warriors or lychguard. Tyriks
I used him yesterday for the first time, but still didn't really get a chance to use him. I was behind on points so I had to deep strike him behind a Vindicare that was sitting on an objective picking my stuff off and take care of him. That left him out of the action most of the game, but he did get me a lot of VPs for such a cheap unit. I'll need to keep bringing him to form a fuller opinion. Daimyo-Phaeron Lenoch
Given how important our characters are, and how good Vindicares are at killing them, I’d say using the Hexmark to take care of him was a good use of him. Countersniping, except it’s much closer range. I was going to say that vehicles can't be lead by characters, but then, the detachment ability Command Protocols is not a keyword on any unit. So does that mean that it is active for every unit? Or is it available only for units that can actually be lead by characters? Captain Idaho
Active for anything counting as being led by a character, even if nothing can actually do so currently. So the Hexmark can feasibly project an aura of buffing to many a unit and vehicle that wouldn't have gotten it otherwise. Captain Idaho
I've been thinking that a 3 Hexmark Destroyer list as actually pretty nasty. They can't be targeted further than 12" away and each one gets to fire back with Multi threat eliminator. It really works well against MSU style armies. Potentially players might choose not to fire at your army with weapons of opportunity from transports or pot shots, just because each time they do, you get another 6 shots per Hexmark. Each Hexmark in range to the unit that got shoot can shoot back. Captain Idaho
Yeah! That's gonna be a tournament staple I suspect. Imagine that, getting 18 shots back just because you fired a storm bolter at a Necron Warriors squad. Prot
Honestly at first glance my favourite new unit update was the Reanimator (Love the model but it needed some serious rules buffs over the years). Then it was the hexmark. I guess 3 is certainly possible, but the problem is this army really needs its leaders and there are so many great characters in the book. Mandragola
Yeah these guys look pretty great. A lychguard brick looks like being a fairly standard choice and you could quite legitimately have three hexmarks loitering nearby, ready to mess up anyone who shoots at them. Buffing vehicles and other character-less units is great. It’s a slight shame that +1 doesn’t stack with things like Heavy or the canoptek bonus from a technomancer.
