Armageddon basing request

Hi all, 

 

I'm working on a new project themed around the Battle for Armageddon (the second war; the first against Waa-Ghazghkull), and would like to the models' bases to evoke the sandy desert of the period. The paints have changed quite a bit, so do you have any suggestions for getting something like this using the modern GW (or other) colours?

My suggestion would be Mournfang brown base and then a heavy Zamesi Desert drybrush and Ushabti Bone drybrush.

bascially it was this. 

 

The names were different back then but this is basically the process. I think it was snakebite leather as a base back then.

I have that boxed set, and the paint key isn't overly helpful - it just says Bestial Brown  (although it could just mean that's the rim colour)

 

@Azaiel's suggestion sounds like it would give a good result, though

you know the more i looked at that image the weirder it felt until i finally figured it out.

Yeah, that was before GW retconned the Salamanders' appearance. Which if I remember was a couple of years after the Armageddon Global Campaign.
