Just confirming: shoot + charge?

I sat out most of 9th edition, so one of the newest things to me is that it appears that I can shoot and still charge? Am I understanding that correctly?

In previous editions I wasn’t able to charge after shooting unless I had “assault” but now that is shoot after advance.

While I’m here, can someone also verify that I’m reading “pistol” correctly?

If my unit is engaged, like they fought in the last battle round and are still engaged with an enemy unit, they can still shoot in the shooting phase with their pistols? That makes sense to me, but it’s different from what I remember so wanted to double check.

Thanks in advance for your reply!

Yep. I'm not 100% sure about 6th/7th, but in 8th, 9th and 10th you are free to move, shoot and charge with any and every unit.

The only prohibitions in 10th are for units that Advanced (unless they have a special rule like the Howling Banshees do), or got out of a Transport after it moved (if they disembark before it moves, they can move/shoot/charge as normal); or any other edge cases scenarios (eg, Space Marine Inceptors can deep strike, which normally doesn't stop you charging, but they can use their Meteoric Descent rule to come down outwith 3", but that specifically prohibits them from charging).

Yes, some of the older editions required to you shoot or charge (I think this was 2nd and/or 3rd?), or only charge the unit you shot at (I think it was 4th and 5th that required you to charge at only units you shot, not at anything else). 10th edition is a lot less restrictive in this regard.

Yep, that's exactly right. Normally a unit cannot shoot at all while they are within engagement range of an enemy unit.

Pistols allow a model to shoot, but only with Pistol weapons, and only targeting units that they are in engagement range of.

The only other exception (barring unit-specific special rules) is for Monsters and Vehicles, which get the Big Guns Never Tire (page 20) rule, which lets them both shoot into units that they are in engagement range of, and shoot at units that they are not in engagement range with (but those units cannot be in engagement range, as normal) - but they suffer a -1 to hit penalty for doing so unless it's a Pistol weapon. Oh, and Big Guns also lets them be shot at too, with a -1 unless it's with a Pistol weapon.

So yeah.

  • Pistols can be shot while in melee
  • Vehicles/Monsters can shoot in melee like Pistols
  • Vehicles/Monsters can shoot from melee; and can be shot by units regardless of being in melee too
