Generic Gravis Test List

Primarily due to my love for the model line I’ll be focusing on how to build competition Gravis list during most of 10e. I might do the same thing with Phobos for same reasons later, but a 2 level Warlock dip is more likely. We’ll see.

To start, I’ll not be using special characters or building toward any particular Chapter. Painted a Successor Chapter, I can test which Chapter abilities and characters enhance a Gravis Army best. As usual, I’ll have to determine the effects of 10e terrain and victory conditions as this Edition of 40k rolls out.

285 9 Eradicators

460 12 Inceptors

660 18 Aggressors

440 20 Heavy Intercessors

95 Gravis Captain

55 Gravis Apothecary

Test List 1995

I’m use to shaving things like Eradicators and Inceptors into 5 man units so my list building is going to lack a bit of flexibility until I buy a box of each (used my “spares” in these to make character conversations). Not a huge issue just a bit of time and money expenditures I can make up by time the Codex is released.

I am extremely concerned Marines aren’t going to do well in the long run. It’s just a feeling, but it seems Astartes Infantry is going to get caught in the donut hole between cheap hordes and Uber tough vehicles and Knights. Marines running with heavy numbers of Scouts and Vehicles just feels bad. Hopefully I’m off on that though.

You are severally lacking anti-tank here, I would say drop the Inceptors and go 18 Eradicators.  You can Strategically Reserve two full units of Eradicators with two attached Gravis Apothecaries, for 55 points you don't need to get the OC bonus from them.

The biggest issue with Gravis is mobility, and Inceptors aren't enough to do it.  What is going to happen is that you are going to get a traffic jam, your already slow models are going to run into each other.  I would suggest some Land Raiders, mobility, firepower and mobile cover.  In a standard Land Raider you can fit a 6-man Gravis Unit such as Eradicators or Aggressors, a Crusader a 6-man unit plus two accompanying Characters.

Named Gravis Characters:

Marneus Calgar comes with two Bladeguard, but you can attach him comfortably to a 6-man Aggressor Unit in a Crusader.  Here's a fun tactic, deploy them inside a Crusader, on your first turn they deploy 3", move 5", advance d6" that is a 9-14" move a good roll and you can still shoot and Charge.  Then load up a second Aggressor unit behind them and move your Land Raider up!

Iron Father Feirros He's a techmarine that gives a 5++ feel no pain to his unit.  Attach him to a big squad of Heavy Intercessors and run him behind Land Raiders or Dreadnoughts

Tor Garadon - My favorite the cheapest of the named at only 5 pts above a standard Gravis Captain, I bet he will be spending more points in the future - Attach him to Eradicators, and he gives them the Combat they need and provides Lethal Hits, yeah he's basically a Close Combat Gravis Apothecary.

I think the Inceptors offer much needed mobility in a Gravis focused list.

I would potentially drop the number of Aggressors so two full squads of Eradicators can be included.

The above advice on characters is very good. I personally love Tor Garadon and he can do some real damage against vehicles if the opportunity is presented.

I agree the Inceptors offer much needed mobility, especially with their Deep Strike.

On the one hand this feels like there isn't much in the way of bodies but its over 60, and all gravis so its just a feeling not a reality

But more accurate may be to say its missing something - Terminatores, Bikes, Dreads... other high toughness high armor save mutliple wound things that are similar to but not exactly gravis.

I’d love to go 2 full units of Eradicators. I happen to only have 10 models presently but that’s a worthy change and the extra points should free points for a Warlord Trait - whatever the heck were calling it currently. I haven’t done that deep in the Indexes as I don’t trust them and Codex coming soonish. Nice heads up. Thanks

I succumbed to FOMO and bought a Captain and unit of Terminators but trying not to push them in the list until I e given “true” Gravis a real set of test. ie games versus hordes, elites, and vehicle themed armies.

Once the actual codex comes out we shall see. There will be a lot of changes, points, new detachments. While your test lists are very specific I always try to build for general use. You got a lot of slow moving but tough dudes that might benefit better from different detachment rules we havent seen yet.
