crimsondave
So, I’m starting to paint some black legion and the gold trim seems endless. I thought about airbrushing the gold and painting black. Is this a bad idea and, if not, does it actually save time? Figured I’d ask before reinventing the wheel. Guest
Here is a idea for you. Main one from this video is the paint pen. I think your issue as you rightly say is the gold trim, I had a similar issue painting Guilliman so I know the pain... I think its easier to paint the black in but others might say the opposite. And to be fair depending on the model I might do the opposite. OttoVonAwesome
Lot's have people have taken the gold basecoat and fill in the panels approach it definitely can save alot of time especially if you do the majority of your painting with brushes and are only going for a tabletop standard. I would only reccomend against it if you are the type who uses airbrushes to set contrast and shadow on the main armour panels beacuase that's basically impossible once the trim is already painted. I did some word bearers with the airbrush and by the end wished I'd did it the trim first way. sonsoftaurus, Firedrake Cordova and crimsondave 2 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/379835-painting-black-legion-question/#findComment-5978186 Share on other sites
Grotsmasha
The answer is.... It depends? I personally find it faster and easier to spray gold, wash and highlight the trim, then fill in the panel colours for trim heavy models like CSM, or Guilliman, even more so if using contrast. crimsondave and Firedrake Cordova 1 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/379835-painting-black-legion-question/#findComment-5978225 Share on other sites
Karhedron
I do base colour and then trim as that is just what I am used to. As others have posted, doing the trim colour first and then filling in the base colours is perfectly viable. It certainly isn't a bad idea. Doing it one way or the other largely comes down to personal taste and whether you use an airbrush or not. Maybe do a 5-man squad to test the gold-first, black-second approach and see if it is easier and gives you a finish you are happy with. Firedrake Cordova
Lots of people (including Duncan) paint the trim first, and then cut in the main armour colour around it. Really, the only correct answer is the one which works best for you - it might be worth painting one model by doing the armour first, and another by doing the trim first, and then going with whichever you found quicker/easier/gave the best result. nilsh
For me it depends on how much trim there is to paint. If there's a lot, I usually paint it first and then the armour plate, and vice versa if it's a more manageable amount of trim.
