Welcome to part one of the Blood Angels Unit of the Week series!

Following the release of the 10th edition Index, there is no better time to discuss all the units we have access to. Each week a different unit will appear, with the idea being that we discuss how best to use that model on the battlefield. Where part one will discuss the units from the units found within Index: Blood Angels, parts two to four will discuss Index: Space Marines, part five will be Imperial Armour, and part six will be Legends.

Note, this isn't to lament any nerfs, etc, from previous editions; the rules are as they are so try to unlock its potential for those who wish to use them all the same. Similarly, this thread is only for using the option being discussed; it matters not if you feel something is a better choice as such comments aren't constructive to the topic and shall be removed.

Without further ado, here's this week's entry:

What are you thoughts here folks? How best would you play Lemartes?

  • To compliment a list, or to build a list around?
  • Sons of Sanguinius or Gladius Task Force?
  • What unit is he leading, if any?
  • What delivery options are you using?
  • What deployment options are you using?
  • Stratagem synergy of note?

Over to you.

Should you want your model on display here (or on another thread), then submit a photo here please.

(Once I work out how best to float it!)

As an aside, the thread setup may change over the coming weeks until I'm happy with them. This includes the photos.

Lemartes only goes with Jump DC but he goes with them like bacon and eggs!

Death Company are blenders that go through most units but struggle against high end targets due to their attacks maxing out at S8 and the limitations of an MEQ profile (a 6+ FNP only goers so far). Lemartes addresses both these issues quite effectively.

First off he grants Lethal Hits which is always great to have on any unit with a bucket load of attacks but particularly when those attacks have decent damage and AP. Power Fists are great on DC but don't smash vehicles quite the way they used to. Add Lemartes and any 6s to Hit will auto-Wound making them a serious threat to even the largest targets, doubly so if their target is affected by Oath of Moment.

Lemartes second ability provides his unit with the -1 Damage rule. This is really good for facing off against other elite infantry units. Most infantry melee weapons cap out at 2 Damage so this rule effectively doubles their durability when fighting Terminators, Bladeguard Veterans and other similar units.

I think Lemartes is better for DC than either a regular Chaplain or Astorath and is definitely worth his points. He works equally well in a Gladius Strike Force or a Sons of Sanguinius detachment. The only thing he does not work so well with is Thunder Hammers as Lethal Hits conflicts somewhat with Devastating Wounds so the best loadout for DC led by Lemartes is probably Power Fists and Inferno Pistols.

I love everything about Lemmy. One of the things I've loved about Primaris is how good the new sculpts have been for our heroes and would not say no to a new Lemmy sculpt as much as I love the current one. The only thing I don't like about Lemmy is the attention he gets and in 10th he might need a primaris chassis for survivability.

I think Lemartes could be a cool candidate for the new idea of "Let's just scale him up a little better." like the castellan did with the Black Templars re-fresh.  Not everyone needs to go full Primaris, and he's already one of the early examples of "tactical rock" so there's not much to grump about there, either!

I kind of feel that he is a little like Dante, where a special BA character is probably out done by a regular space marine version.  (Regular Jump Captain I think is better value for Jump units than Dante).

A regular Chaplain with jump pack gives +1 to wound and some bonus mortal wounds, I feel that offers the DC more than -1 damage and Lethal Hits, and it saves you 50 points. Plus you can equip the Chaplain with a power fist as well.

Hopefully in the upcoming balance slate he'll come down in points, 135 points seems a lot, he's only T4 and 4 wounds, he's 25 points more than Kayvaan Shrike which I find very odd, as Shrike is so much better as a jump leader.

Chaplain Cassius is 80 points as well, he obviously doesn't have a jump pack but the jump pack tax on a character is usually 10 points, Asmodai is also only 70 points, who is again another first born Chaplain (though he has worse rules).  He is more expensive (even accounting for the jump pack) than most of the other chapter masters, he is more expensive than Mephiston.

A new model would be good, hopefully we will get him and Astorath, along with new scale San Guard and DC, now they have primaris jump pack units, it should open the way for our special units and characters to get new upgraded models.

Think you are probably right here, especially with the power fist. I fanboy big time whenever he is mentioned but that bolt pistol is a waste of a equipment slot.

I thought it was interesting that the Sanguinary guard was lost in the battle with Angaron, thought that was a good segway for a new primaris kit.
