Dark_Vengeant's Black Legion "We are returned."

I recently returned to 40k after about a 15 year hiatus. My first armies were Catachans, Dark Angels and I even attempted some Black Legion although I found painting the trim on the old model casts way too difficult.   

 

In the time between I got into painting scale models such as airplanes and tanks.  Darktide turned me back to 40k and I decided I would try to do Black Legion for real this time.  The new casts are much better, and much easier to paint.  I will say the trim is still almost just as tedious.  I think the most daunting thing is trim when you have thousands of points worth of grey to paint in your closet...  

 

When I first played 40k we used goblin green bases for everything, so this time around I wanted bases that were more convincing and contributed to the look of the army.  For the lava bases I used cork and wet blending to create the lava effect. 

 

I will post completed models in this thread as I finish them.   For your viewing pleasure.

Awesome stuff.

 

Sometimes it may be six of one/half dozen of the other, but if trim is the issue, there’s the option of spray gold then fill in the black panels.

I condsidered it but then I realised it would likely be easier to just paint on the metallics from a black base. Its a lose-lose situation.

These old rhino kits were nostalgic to build!! But they are terrible kits!!

Ah, they aren't so bad, just on par for the time - you have to remember the kit is about 20 years old.  They are way better than the original landspeeder kit that came out just a year or two prior - that is the worst model I've ever had the misfortune of building.

 

Yours looks nice, just needs a bit of gap filling is all between the track portion and the main hull.  Where are the skulls from?  They are very stylish.

He's fantastic!  Only thing is that the lava on the base is brighter than the flames on the mini, which seems a bit backwards.

This might give a better impression of colour balance. Good point for future, though. Lava would be kinda dull. I thought by adding more white to the flames it would give the impression of hotter burning.

That photo is better, and I don't think the lava needs to be dull, necessarily, just duller than the mini.  In my opinion, in most cases you want your mini to be brighter than your base as you want to draw attention to the mini, not the base.  So yeah, I think bringing some of the brightness of the lava into the flames on the mini would help it pop.

 

Not that it necessarily needs it - its a great mini regardless - I just think it would make it ever greater.

 

BTW, I like his flunkees as well - I like how you've worked the brighter colours in but in a way that compliments their boss rather than overshadows him.
