They're supposed to be balanced, and I imagine 5 Terminators, 5 Sternguard, a Terminator Captain, and a whole other squad is probably a bit too much for Combat Patrol.

But who knows, maybe some of these units have changes coming in the Codex we aren't yet aware about. Rare, but it can happen.

Pretty sure they haven’t been very well balanced up to this point.

They definitely haven't been. The worst boxes are the ones with named characters as those are always marked up high, technically eroding the discount(s). A lot of the boxes are also better off as one off buys if you are just starting.

None of the CP boxes should have a named character in it.  There are Value boxes that are not CP boxes that might - like the Chapter Specific boxes, and yes including the named causes multiple issues, like not wanting multiples of a named you can only have one of.

Edit to Add:  The real problem with the CP boxes are that they aren't balanced against each other after the changes to vehicle toughness bands.  The Dark Eldar one with multiple vehicles looks incredibly mean compared to say the Deathwatch Patrol or the Thousand Sons box.  Most of those boxes will have little to no chance to deal with one vehicle, let alone multiples or a particularly stout one like the Dreads.

Even just HQs kinda erode the value if you're wanting it to be a product you buy multiple of. 4 Terminator heros is about as practical as 2 Typhus. Particularly now that squad sizes are more fixed.

The Guard one is probably more practical in that regard. HQ customisability without conversions.

I meant in the Combat Patrol side of the game, rather than balanced regarding discounts.

Lots of talk about "value of discount" while ignoring that these are no longer meant to serve as just a discount box.

I don’t think they’re balanced in terms of game play up to this point.

I'm not disappointed - Not to say I don't agree its a pretty poor execution of the combat patrol concept, but it was pretty much confirmed that the Leviathan Combat patrols were the combat patrols, I'd have loved a second option but I wasn't expecting it.

I like the models. Doesn’t seem a bad box to add to a starter box

Yeah if it’s the second box you buy after your first combat patrol box it’s a good expansion. Pair it with the Blood Angels or Dark Angels boxes and you’ve got a solid start on a Marine army. It’s definitely a weird box to start with but not terrible. The previous Marine box was a much better starting point, imo. I guess if you’ve got enough extra arms you could make the Infernus marines into Intercessors. They’re honestly the weirdest part of this.

Also any CP box with a named character in it is intended to GET someone into the hobby or that army, but not to serve as building blocks, blocks as in plural, for the army. Buy one and move on to other purchases in the range, whereas other CPs serve as building blocks for an army; buy a couple! Grey Knights for example.

I stopped trying to seriously figure out GW's logic a long time ago. It made my head hurt. The only boiler plate logic you can use is go with what makes them the most profit! Figure that out and you have your answer.

I'm normally one to defend a lot of GW decisions, but this CP box is just dumb. It wouldn't of been terrible if they had done what they had done for the Vanguard of SoB boxes, throwing in a little extra on top of monopose kits (like the Rhino or Impulsor). Imagine this box with a Land Raider in it. It's be both thematic and it'd make the CP box an actual deal

I realized it was a one and done CP box when they revealed it, but yeah after watching AT's video on it, its sorta hot garbage given it's also one of the worst values. What was GW thinking?

I think their box sets for this edition are going to be very hit and miss.

the rumored guard battle force box seems as awkward and weird as this if not more so
