Updating Marines piecemeal throughout an edition is very frustrating.

Space Wolves suffer from the opposite problem, where units like Blood Claws and Sky Claws currently cannot be lead by generic characters from the codex.

They could release stuff all at once but they want to drip feed releases on purpose and that wont ever change. They are stuck in their ways until it wont work for them.

 

Could they also go full digital? Sure but they wont cuz money

That's a discussion to bring up with tournament organisers who will likely be understanding. Same with opponents for pick up games.

 

There's probably going to be another balance soon which will likely address it, or you could always contact GW to raise it as an issue.
