Hi folks,

Got myself two models to practice painting some black legion.

Following Duncan here:

I've also watched some videos (table top tactics) where they use dark reaper, thunderhawk blue and fenrisian grey to edge highlight the models.

However I also watched a video where they showed how dry brushing black power armour and then washing with nuln oil and the outcome looked pretty good (black templars).

So, I was wondering if anyone else has done BL with a dry brush of the black armour to make it pop a little?.

How do you folks go about it? I really don't fancy loads of edge highlighting after the TS I did.

I'm no expert by any means, but my heresy dark angels are;

prime black

heavy overbrush with corax black

lighter drybrush with dawnstone

very light drybrush with administratum grey

(paint all metals)

wash with nuln oil.

The almost but not quite black of corax means you can actually shade it to add depth, which you can't really do with pure black, and i don't have the patience for edge highlighting two or three times per model, so this works for me.

Yeah, I've read a lot more on Reddit now and also went to my local GW to pick up a couple of bits and talked to the chap there (won't say his name but he is really nice). He also paints black via dry brush so that's the way I'm going.

I have one of the dark vengeance chaos models on the table now, so that's my final test model.

Look up Mediocre Hobbies tutorial for Black Legion and JuanHidalgo's tutorial for black armor on YouTube. Makes black look so much less boring and much more interesting to look at.

Cheers folks.

I think my test Mini turned out okay, for me.  I'm no pro, just tabletop kind of standard.

I based with chaos black, dry brush of dark reaper, thunderhawk blue and then fenrisian grey.  Trim done in retribution armour, then wash the lot in nuln oil.

I've gone back and highlighted the trim with retribution armour and liberator gold, then a wash of reikland flesh shade..and I'm happy. I can then highlight further with some storm host silver as and where I feel.  It was really more to stop the black just looking flat.

I believe with BL you can get away with not highlighting the black at all, but just highlights for the metallics instead. Also I prefer the 3rd Ed BL style- red top knots, gold trim shoulder pads, rest silver trim and green eye lenses. Mabye a different red to the weapons casings or flat silver done in a different way to the trim.

I use this recipe for my black legion which can be viewed on this forum.

I use vallejo black primer, and I don't even repaint the black i honestly just use the black primer as my base coat.  I just ensure it is airbrushed on thick enough to have full coverage.
