I realised last night that I think I've been playing the Big Guns Never Tire (BGNT) and blast interaction wrong. I previously thought that a model with a BLAST weapon cannot fire it while within engagement range at all, however now my reading is that:

  1. BGNT allows VEHICLES and MONSTERS to fire weapons even when within engagement range, and they can opt to shoot at targets within engagement range if a friendly model is also engaged, albeit at -1 to hit.
  2. BLAST weapons cannot target models within engagement range
  3. Ergo a MONSTER with blast, if within engagement range, can fire out of the combat with that BLAST weapon, at a target not within engagement range, with the -1 to hit modifier.

I had just assumed that things couldn't fire out of combat, however I think the ability to fire out of combat was already there in 9th, if unengaged, and 9th explicitly, in no uncertain terms, said that a model within engagement ranged can only shoot at models within engagement range.

The key wording difference between 9th and 10th, is:

  • 9th: "can only [shoot] against enemt units that it is within engagement range of"
  • 10th "Monsters and vehicles are eligible to shoot...even when they are within engagement range [full stop]. [They] can target one or more enemy units within engagement range"

Am I right?

Where did you get the marked part from?

It's in the BGNT rule - they have to be in the same combat - if enemy unit A is in contact with tyranid monster B and gaunts C, Monster B can still shoot A with non blast weapons, even though C is still in engagement range.
