Marshal Edrek with powerfist. I also gave him a traditional iron halo instead of the heretic skeleton mini-stockade.

Some great painting going on there! Especially those Apothecaries, really well done. Can't wait to see more.

The name, Durandal for one of the ships, is that a nod to the Durandal home brew Dreadnought, some one came up with few years ago?

Awesome work.

Thanks! I'll get back to painting some of my collection soon.

Durandal was a nod to using the name Roland for one of my Castellans. Durandal being Roland's sword from the historical poem. Roland was a paladin of Charlemagne.

No worries at all, hope to see more work soon.

Ahh I understand now, love a bit if history.

Also regarding the Durandal dreadnought, it makes sense why that name was chosen!

I  got real burnt out on painting him lol. I sorta slap chopped the last half of the edging I did. I might go back and clean it up or I might not? Going forward I did learn that I prefer a standard gray edging versus using GW's Dark Reaper, which I used on him. I just don't like the blue-gray edging on black. I've tried Thunderhawk and then Fenrisian Grey, nope. Now Dark Reaper, nope. My go to was Eshin Grey and then a small amount of Dawnstone. That will be what i carry on with when I do my Ballistus Dreadnought and then my three impulsors, land raider, repulsor, thunderstrike sorm speeder, drop pod, and two gladiator tanks.

After thinking more about it, I may go back and re-do all the edge highlighting? Do it in mechanicus grey, then a fine huighlight on corners and bolts using administratum grey. I'm just not happy with how it looks with dark reaper. After a few days away from it and no longer feeling burnt out on it, I'm summoning the motivation to go back and do that.

I had to go back over the edges of that crusade icon water decal on his right knee with matte black to remove that decal edge look. Same with the red cross on the back of his power plant, and his personal heraldry on the side of the missile launcher. Uggh.

Devout Fury, Gladiator Lancer.

A problem I encountered is the classic one of spraying it in GW Chaos Black but my go-to black is either Army Painter matte black, or Vallejo Model Color black. Even if I used GW's Abaddon Black I would still have the problem. Maybe I need to brush paint them in whichever black I will use out of the pot after I spray them with chaos black? Pain in the arse though.

I hear you regarding the black on black. I now prime with spray can and overpaint with the desired black from the bottle to prevent those pesky blotches.

Also works better when applying transfers.

Very nice army btw. I defo have to try the wood effect.

I think it's generally considered a good practice to base coat your miniatures, even if it's painting black paint over a black primer. I have been doing this for years after having learnt the difference the hard way, Also, it took me an embarrassingly long while to discover that "black isn't always just black," i.e. there are slight (or even significant!) differences between 'the same colour' between brands or lines of paints. In addition to differences in hue or saturation, different paints will have different finishes: some more matte, some more glossy - that's also something to bear in mind since these differences will be most apparent on large surfaces such as those on vehicles.

Yeah.

For most of my time spent in 40k, going back to 2012 or 2013, I did collections that were not black; Blood Angels, Crimson Fists, and Dark Angels. This is definitely something I didn't really consider before doing Black Templars.

And even when I was seeing painting tutorial videos online where Duncan Rhodes explained the need to repaint with Abaddon Black a miniature that had been sprayed with Chaos Black, I kinda took a cavalier attitude about it and brushed it off. lol.

I went and stocked up on my go-to black today, Army Painter Fanatics Matte Black, because I'll be burning through some bottles as I re-base each new model I paint. Working on a drop pod atm. Went over it with a new coat of AP Matte Black before starting it.
