A question for you Scars lore masters. Does anyone have an idea when and why the White Scars started sporting trophy skulls? It doesn't appear to be something they did during the Horus Heresy as far as I can tell from the books and artwork but is prevalent with some of the 40k models going back a few editions (the previous Kor'sarro Khan model, for example.).

So, can anyone shed any light on this?

It most likely began after the Heresy as the position of Master of the Hunt was crystalized.

After Qin Xa, Master of the Keshig, was slain by Eidolon at the Kalium Gate, Jubal Khan was offered the position by Jaghatai. Jubal refused and instead became the first Master of the Hunt. We can infer that the literal headhunting traditions surrounding it were codified after the conclusion of the Horus Heresy as Jubal was slain by Abaddon in the opening stages of the Solar War. From there the practice probably trickled down through the ranks, perhaps subconsciously.

We don't have a definitive answer though, so that's just my theory and thoughts.

Many thanks for the reply. That’s a sound theory and would make sense. Also a sobering reminder of just how many great Scars characters died during the Heresy.

Digressing slightly but it’s interesting to note that Hvarl Redblade of the Space Wolves wore trophy skulls during the Heresy, something of an outlier in a loyalist legion.

I think that part of the theme of the White Scars novels for the Heresy; Scars, Path of Heaven, and Warhawk, is sacrifice. Jaghatai mentions at one point that they were spoiled. The legion was allowed to do as it pleased and rankled at even the smallest efforts at control from Terra. They are paying it back.

Spoiler

If you have a name and are a White Scar, then you are going to go through the wringer in the Heresy.
