With terrain being more important and interactive in Legions Imperialis I'm very excited to build up a proper 8mm scale terrain collection. So I'd thought I'd start a thread where we can inspire others and bring ideas together. Whether it's the Civitas Imperialis sets, the old titanicus realm of battle boards or new and old 3rd party and 3d printed stuff. I want to see them all!

To get the ball rolling:

Here's a build from the launch of Titanicus I found back in my inspiration folder I really liked:

And another with small terraces which I really like but I can't find the original creator anymore, just pinterest links...

I also recently saw vanguard miniatures tease a kickstarter (not live yet) for new bases, but more on point also bases for buildings which will make swapping buildings out for their ruined variants a lot easier:

Here’s a link to the post in my Titanicus thread with all of my currently assembled terrain:

Here you go.

It’s obviously not painted or anything but it gives an idea of what you can use. Mine are probably a bit larger than what would normally be used in LI since they’re built for obscuring Titans, but you get the idea.

I did pick up a box of the Ruins along with a Civitas box that’s been sitting at my LGS for months now, I intend to mix the two to both make new terrain and also toppers for the current terrain I have.

I have a small collection of assembled 4Ground terrain and a 4' x 4' city mat I bought for Titanicus/Dropzone, which should all work nicely (I also have quite a bit of 4 Ground and TTCombat stuff to assemble). Here's one:

I too have a bunch from my AT blog. Went with the tower theme but will look to add the new ruins, homemade hills and will always look for some complimentary bits which Aircraft, Infantry and Tanks can interact with.

Love the 4ground stuff. Managed to snag a few of the microscale habblocks they did before they quit. Still need to build them but with LI out a lot more motivated for that now.

You can still buy their stuff from their mother Company Tymeagain.

Oh dang that's great, thanks!

Some really lovely stuff here and a great idea for a thread @matcap86

Apologies for the incoming spam here and also for the people sick of me posting these pics over the years! I've tried to limit to the human-only terrain, so relevant for Legions.

Airfield - made from various bits, the runway pieces themselves were 15mm road terrain from I think Team Yankee

I've immediately gone back on what I said before, but I made terrain for both sides of combatants, you could swap in and out bits depending on who controls it as an objective. I guess you could do similar for Loyalists/Traitors in Legions?

A Trainyard, this was made with a combination of the GW industrial complex kit and a 'pre-heresy train' and monorail set. (I think Grimdark Terrain). As I had my main board set on a grassland mat, I cut up areas of a cheap city mousepad mat and had the industrial areas, towns etc. based on those (so you didn't just have buildings directly on grassland)

Trainyard3.webp

I added lots of little dioramas to the terrain, just to make a bit more interesting as people spot things as they are playing

Some river pieces - think these were bought as a resin set from the electronic auction site. I know these aren't popular with some gamers as they can block off areas of terrain to access, but that's precisely why I think they are worth adding - you can have choke-points which get fought over as objectives, or add a rule so a dangerous terrain test has to be made if the river is crossed elsewhere - and then all have a laugh as the person's most expensive unit fails that roll and gets swept away.

Another airfield/helo-pad piece

I have various areas of woodland dotted around. I haven't yet seen how the Forest rules work in Legions, but hopefully it is similar to previous games in this scale where some abstraction is needed - you have a template for the forest, and if you are in the area of terrain you get some cover and LoS bonuses. You can push the trees around to make space for your infantry as needed

DemoBattle1.webp

Final shot, showing how the town/industrial areas are based on 'city' areas, then you have them connected by roads (again, I haven't checked the new Legions rules to see if those give movement bonuses).

End of spam!

Nice to see some of the second ed buildings in play there Pacific81. I have some of those, plus the Titan Legions card buildings (the set with the Imperator) and then the plastic ruins from 3rd edition to build too. So plenty of options, which is nice. I have some Battlefield in a Box streams which work well as rivers at this scale (I use them as such for my 6mm Napoleonics) and some 6mm scaled trees, so I am hoping that I am well set for terrain. I think the only thing I don't have are hills!

I'll pick up the spam-torch with a slew of pics from my games, then :D

Big, solid chunks for LOS-blocking and multi-detachment garrisons. Indestructible mountains. Fields and shrubs.

Heavily industrialised factories and logistics areas.

Simple cardboard blocks enhanced by a smattering of more detailed bits on top.

Smaller rocks and bocages.

Hills, roads and sub-urban idylls.

Woods, too.

Trenchlines.

City walls.

Water features.

Elevated roadways.

Just generally a pile of stuff.

Lots of neat things to be done at this scale, when one just doesn't settle for a boring monotone setup :D

This is the board I had a game on yesterday, with a lot of battlefield in a box terrain, some  civitas and bits blitz stuff that my buddy set up (and took the pictures of).

We did 1000, hence the 4x4, and the game felt really fun. Maybe the tar pools could have been areas of difficult instead of dangerous in terms of giving a bit more survivability, but there was so much LOS blocking and kinda playing chicken with it that having stuff die when it finally got shot at felt pretty fitting.

This is all the spires terrain kit built, I’m really happy with the kit and what I made - all the buildings are modular so that the tops can be removed and changed around.

I have some other none GW kits on order and I will get round to painting it all properly one day but will gladly share some updates when the other bits arrive. I also want some ruins but that will have to wait until the new year.

Weird architecture. I love it!

If you have some time to kill, do browse through Crablezworth's thread over at DakkaDakka, it has some amazing worldbuilding happening!

https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/787202.page

Martin Klug over at Instagram also has some amazing terrain: https://www.instagram.com/somnia_et_redactae/

Jonathan Hartman (who does the sound/composing work for GW) also did some amazing terrain for Adeptus Titanicus, you might have to browse a few years back on his Instagram, but it'll be worth it! https://www.instagram.com/shibboleth02/

And this one...very biased of me since they're my designs, might also inspire you: https://cults3d.com/en/users/BitsBlitzDesigns/3d-models

Speaking of gimps, the problem is Sherrypie if anyone can somehow reverse it and see all of the people you have tied up and suspended over the tabletop, and forced to watch your games

Well, what could one want if not a *captive* audience?

FYI I found some really nice 3D files from Grumpy Guy Gaming from Croatia.  He has some samples on Thingiverse and I am looking at getting the full files.  But they fit LI great and are pretty easy to print.  Still need some other things like roads, woods, and trenches.  But I am keeping an eye out for good STLs.  I’ll post pictures when I have more printing done.

  • 3 weeks later...

As a headsup the Troublemaker games for building plinths is up now. I'm backing these as modular plinths seem like the perfect way to make both properly grounded buildings and be able to swap them out for ruins.

For those with (FDM) 3d printers:

I came across this designer yesterday who's doing amazing stuff building modular battle boards and buildings. First 2 sets are out now with more to follow.

As an update, I did join Grumpy Guy Gaming’s Patreon.  His gothic buildings are really great for LI or Epic 40K.  He is working on trenches and bunkers as well as a nice set of legion specific order tokens.  Very pleased with what he is doing.
