General Zodd
Hi all, I’m in a quandary, and wanted to see what other people are considering. The bases as supplied are nice, and the fact they can just be painted and be good to go is a bonus. However, I think having so many armies presumably using the same bases, it might get a little repetitive, especially for the larger Titan and Knight units. I’m considering getting some textured paint (like AK Interactive) and either giving it a wash or a drybrush for some colour variation. This should be relatively easy to slap on after I’ve painted the models on the sprues and glued them on, and gives me a bit more to work with if I want to go to town with more detail on certain models’ bases. My main pause for thought is that some of the bases have deep cuts into them, though I could either fill them beforehand, or paint them to look like ditches, streams etc. So, are you going for straight out of the packet, or something different? Black Cohort
I use sand and tufts from Army Painter (https://www.thearmypainter.com/shop/us/basing ) to create a badlands style base on most of my other 6mm stuff. I intend to do the same for for my LI. SkimaskMohawk
I use the ak diorama effects stuff You just glop it on, it dries very fast with the amount used for LI, and then you can colour it with paints/contrast/weathering powder. Used it over the GW bases no problem and you can't even tell there's stuff under. This is how it looks with a quick wash of cygor, directly over a GW LI base: Edited December 9, 2023 by SkimaskMohawk WrathOfTheLion, Doghouse, Pacific81 and 8 others 11 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/381881-how-to-base-your-models-for-legions-imperialis/#findComment-6008610 Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
GW bases I'm just painting Eshin grey with administration grey dry brush and a coat of nuln oil. I plan on, for bases that aren't modeled, using GW Astrogranite with a gentle white dry brush and nuln oil Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/381881-how-to-base-your-models-for-legions-imperialis/#findComment-6008613 Share on other sites
Pacific81
I'm definitely trying a variety of different approaches with my basing. Firstly, am going for a similar sort of effect to @SkimaskMohawk, but probably made it a bit more difficult for myself, using greenstuff and very fine sand and flock (to give a sort broken badlands/wastes look, with a bit of green). For the base shape I do it according to the sort of unit: my Solars are on square bases as I like ranking them up and think it suits the concept. I'm doing some Night Lords which have more of a warband/kill-squad type style, so am doing those on round bases. For the missile launcher bases I did try round bases but didn't like it, not least because it looked like they would shoot themselves in the backs of the heads, so those are on strip bases. I'm planning on doing Death Guard on square bases, as I can imagine them just in ranks marching forward and with bolt-guns blazing. tinpact, LameBeard, Cactus and 1 other 4 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/381881-how-to-base-your-models-for-legions-imperialis/#findComment-6008652 Share on other sites

Do you have an example with one of the stepped bases? Does it just look like a mini slope? Noserenda
Yeah ill be matching them to my titan bases with various rubble effects, i really dont like the plain ones, they dont look like anything to me? Big riveted plates does not a city make. Annoyingly i dont have a finished example to hand but this WIP one i guess shows the base work? 141461010_10159014969525797_8153356676991988182_o Captain Idaho, tinpact and Pacific81 2 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/381881-how-to-base-your-models-for-legions-imperialis/#findComment-6009051 Share on other sites
Deus_Ex_Machina
I am using the default bases with a twist. Since my 30K Iron Hands wander around in muck on the planet New Mars and getting all dusty and dirty their LI counterparts will have to contend with just the dusty weathering powders as Red Oxide Paste would be inappropriate at that scale since you need multiple layers to create the dry, rough terrain effect.
