Hi All,

Looking to get back into the hobby and trying to save some coin by mixing my own highlights which I've had some success in the past.

I try to stick to a colour wheel but metallics are a new horizon.

Would runefang steel mix in with Gehenna gold to lighten up? Plan is to use Gehenna as a base with some nuln oil, highlight with Gehenna, then mix a runefang/Gehenna as a third and then use a light point 4th highlight of runefang.

Basically the same with standard mechanicus/ Abaddon black (creating eshin) but metallic.

Also Averland sunset mixed in with Mephiston red to make evil sunz and fire dragon orange.

Corax with a grey for celestial grey.

Any tips and advice would be appreciated and I'll use the medium as well. Definitely not painting a blood angels army.

Thanks.

GW's tutorials often have gold being highlighted with silver (Stormhost, I think) for the final highlight, so your plan sounds like it should work. The easiest way to check is to mix up a little on your palette and see if it "looks right"

Otherwise, your plan seems reasonable. Paint-mixing was how things were done "back in the day" before GW had a giant range of colours.

For gold, my usual recipe is to start with a base of Retributor Armour and wash it with Aggrax Earthshade (I use my dwindling supply of gloss but the regular stuff will do). Then I highlight with Liberator Gold and a top highlight of Stormhost silver. Pretty straightforward but it looks good. Here is my Dante which was painted in this way.
