Welcome to part two of the Blood Angels Unit of the Week series!

Following the release of the 10th edition Index, there is no better time to discuss all the units we have access to. Each week a different unit will appear, with the idea being that we discuss how best to use that model on the battlefield. Where part one will discuss the units from the units found within Index: Blood Angels, parts two to four will discuss Index: Space Marines, part five will be Imperial Armour, and part six will be Legends.

Note, this isn't to lament any nerfs, etc, from previous editions; the rules are as they are so try to unlock its potential for those who wish to use them all the same. Similarly, this thread is only for using the option being discussed; it matters not if you feel something is a better choice as such comments aren't constructive to the topic and shall be removed.

Without further ado, here's this week's entry:

What are you thoughts here folks? How best would you use a Judiciar?

  • To compliment a list, or to build a list around?
  • Which Detachment are you using?
  • What unit is he leading, if any?
  • What delivery options are you using?
  • What deployment options are you using?
  • Stratagem synergy of note?

Over to you.

Should you want your model on display here (or on another thread), then submit a photo here please.

(Once I work out how best to float it!)

As an aside, the thread setup may change over the coming weeks until I'm happy with them. This includes the photos.

Striking First is a very powerful ability in 10th so you want to stick this guy with the squad that has the greatest offensive melee power. That pretty much always means a squad of 6 BGVs. Anything less will not get so much benefit from his ability. Devastating Wounds and Precision on a decent melee profile makes him a scary prospect for Characters who might otherwise threaten the BGVs in melee.

His 4++ only applies in melee so watch out for snipers as they can make a mess of him. Given the points. I would normally consider a Land Raider or Storm Raven to deliver him and his unit but a Librarian Dreadnought is also a useful way to catapult them onto an Objective.

He does not really need much in the way of Enhancements. Archangel's Shard boosts the Devastating Wounds to a 5+ but only against Chaos so is a bit too situational for me. Artisan of War is quite nice if you do not have a better Character to put it on and helps mitigate his lack of Invuln vs shooting.

Basically if I am taking BGVs, I would always take a Judiciar and probably never take him in any other situation.

I like it, however every time I try to build a list I tend to prioritize shooting to melee,  so for instance I will play a few games in a local league this weekend against Tau, Necrons and Votann and even though I would love to use him, I don't think it's efficient (fight first) since maybe you will have a chance to charge, but be charged? even less. I have the same feeling with Meph or Sanguinor sadly. Problem with the shooty edition, not the unit. If your meta has more Nids, Orks, WE it's brilliant with Bladeguard.
