Magos Takatus
Hi. I am getting dangerously smitten by the upcoming Kroot models and have been using the impcat app to plan out colour schemes. Link here for those that haven't heard of impcat before. https://www.impcat.de/about/ I tried to come up with some varied colour schemes, I hope some people will find this useful. Feel free to offer constructive criticism or to add your own colour schemes. :) Zoatibix, Fire Golem, Kythnos and 1 other 2 1 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/382158-kroot-colours-in-impcat/ Share on other sites
Magos Takatus
So... my first test model is almost complete. I used the quills from one scheme and the skin from another, I will do armour markings, paint the meat and the base, and consider if the war-paint will be necessary or if it will make the model too busy. Shame I didn't fill the gaps between the parts but I wasn't entirely sure which parts were skin and which were leather until I actually started picking out the parts separately. Looks like the eye might need a wash around it too for more definition? Feel free to add some feedback. :) sitnam, Dr_Ruminahui, MithrilForge and 1 other 2 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/382158-kroot-colours-in-impcat/#findComment-6044105 Share on other sites
Dr_Ruminahui
That's really nice - I love the transition from red to black/dark brown on the skin as well as the contrasting quills - a very eye catching model. MithrilForge
What he said ... and yes a wash around the eye to ..Make it Pop! you may be right about not needing the warpaint, perhaps only use warpaint on the large figures (Krootox/Rampagers etc) Cheers, Mithril The Pounder and Magos Takatus 1 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/382158-kroot-colours-in-impcat/#findComment-6044118 Share on other sites

That eye is tiny so trying to get a well-placed highlight that will be visible to the naked eye might be beyond my abilities. I might need to do both, so I'll have to be very careful. That's the danger of taking these kinds of close-ups, you see faults that you will know are there, but may be too small to correct. The Pounder
Looks amazing @Magos Takatus! The colours are vibrant without being gaudy, the quills I especially like! Personally I think the eyes are fine. Like you said it’s the extreme close up that makes you doubt yourself. Keep ‘em coming! MithrilForge
@Magos Takatus - @The Pounder has a Valid point I failed to think of, you've shown us a super zoomed in extreme close up of the face and we can only comment from that perspective, The Model may very well "pop" from a foot away and not need that "Dangerously problematic Highlight" step I suggest finishing off the whole model (base & all) and show us a Gaming perspective Shot of the Hungry Dude Cheers, Mithril Magos Takatus 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/382158-kroot-colours-in-impcat/#findComment-6044128 Share on other sites

I plan to work a bit more detail into the bases but I think I'll do that to the whole army and crack out some washes and weathering powders closer to the end. As it is the base was a quick drybrush and I painted the plants. Sadly the plant looks a bit over-exposed. I guess I need to experiment with my lights. Hopefully the army won't take too long to paint up, though these models were a bit more detailed than I planned. I am used to adding a lot of highlights so trusting the oil wash to do it's job on the gun and the cloth around it was a small act of faith. Magos Takatus
Thank you. I'm hoping I can get them done in a fair pace to test how quickly I can crank something like this out. I don't think I'm taking too many shortcuts but my paint list is longer than expected. Also surprisingly few Citadel paints, mainly because they seem to have separated/dried up/both. I'm using mainly Scale 75 right now but as you can see, I'm experimenting with Pro Acryl in places. This a a shame since I needed more drab greens and many of those have dried up. A lot of my Scale 75 greens would have fought for attention from the rest of the model. I guess most of their drab greens would be in their Warfront range. MithrilForge
@Magos Takatus - Pro Acryl bold titanium white is hands down the best white I have ever used... Magos Takatus
Ooh, I just bought that recently. Good recommendation! I used that to re-establish white over the shoulder plate of the test model so I could paint the squad markings. For a white paint the coverage is great. I don't expect miracles from white paint but I am indeed a convert. Edit: it looks like all my images in this thread are broken, is everyone else seeing that too? Perhaps I'll re-upload images tomorrow and add whatever progress I've made too? MithrilForge
In answer to your question - Yes from the second post onwards pics seem broken Mithril Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/382158-kroot-colours-in-impcat/#findComment-6045089 Share on other sites
Magos Takatus
Right, Here's a recap. I'm not sure how the links broke but I'll fix 'em. Right, anything going forward will be new photos. Since I'm batch painting there's going to be a lot more wips and a lot less polished models. :D Still, hopefully the process will still be interesting. The Pounder
Looking good @Magos Takatus! Do you find batch painting works for you? I tend to paint my stuff 2 at a time as I get bored easily! Magos Takatus
I tend to use a hybrid approach of batch painting most of the airbrush stuff and then brush paint individually but this Kroot army is an experiement in being able to crank out an army quickly so it will be a bit more production line-esque. MithrilForge
@Magos Takatus - links seem broken again bud I'm in both camps when it comes to painting, sometimes if I'm on a roll with something I can crank out a few at a time (I'll be honest and say 5 models is my max before I start to get bored with them ) and other times I'm like @The Pounder and like to go ahead and finish one or two models completely to keep me super motivated for the rest ... Look forward to seeing the rest of this force get done and displayed (without broken links ) Cheers, Mithril The Pounder and Magos Takatus 1 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/382158-kroot-colours-in-impcat/#findComment-6045383 Share on other sites
