what kind of coat would you buy for a krieg cosplay?

Brother, do you have any army surplus stores nearby?

I think you're asking for lore accuracy, but I think for a cosplay, with a painting project, bringing that part of you that is real and authentic and special is more important than canon.  In your case, it'd be something like your own country's army surplus.  Failing that, some 2nd-hand thrift store, it'll be an adventure.

ill have to check but the coat is so specialized. guess the hunt is part of the fun?

The Kreig uniform is an amalgamation of the uniforms worn on the western front in world war 1. The helmet is a cross between the French Adrian helmet and the German stahlhelm. The gas mask is very British. The leg puttee were worn by French or British.  The trench coat is French. What makes it distinctive is the bottom of the coat buttons to the side of the coat to allow for easier marching. Getting a reproduction French great coat would be expensive. Getting a surplus great coat and adding a fixing to get the look would be a lot cheaper but would require a little adaption.

alright coat aquired now on to the gas mask (what is that box thing attached to it?)

So if you break down what a ww1/krieg has mask is you have different components. There's a hood with glass/perspex eye holes and beyond the mouth area it attaches to a tube. In the British army they were called small box respirators. The box would contain the filter that made it work. The reason why there were hoods/eye covers were because the chemicals used were toxic to skin on contact.

Thinking about it..... an Austrian army cook set would do the job and be pretty available.
