Where do we stand after the January 30th, 2024 Balance Dataslate and points updates?

See link to warcom article with PDFs of updates.

Nothing much changes. Helbrecht and Grimaldus still autotakes. FBCS now irrelevant if anyone still used it. A full 20-man PCS and a 5-10 man PSB still boss autotakes.

Add other units to taste.

Just start the game with 1 less squad. Most marine list suffer similar points increase. Righteous crusader is still the best(if not the only competitive) non codex marine detachment, and +5pts to get a multimelta still very effective when playing gladius or ironstorm.

Firstborn Crusaders are still good. For Ironstorm still best take. For other detachments maybe normal Intercessors or Assault intercessors instead.

Helbrecht and Grim still great. Because Eldar and CSM got big nerfs  ---> we are even better then before. Just Necrons are very very strong

Or jump back intercessor? +2 pts per model for DS and M12 fly is a worthy trade.

Seams like we weathered this round of updates pretty well then.  So perhaps the more interesting questions are...

What do we think of this update's changes to our opponents?

How might we adapt to those changes?

Before patch, Calgar teleport build is the 1st best performing loyalist marine build, and see 160-170pts nerf.

BT is the 2nd best and don't see much nerf. Helbrecht was already proved terribly undercosted at 95pts. If a 120pts price tag would make less meta-chasers choose BT, then BT is winner. "Among the best but not THE best" is the way to survive in 40K balance adjusting.

Ironstorm BT used to have 80 percent winrate. I expected a hard nerf on them. But as I remember this ultimative list (Kevin Zollinger from Austria with 12 vehicles) is more often played in europe then in the states.

Not that crazy powerful, gladius win more games. Ironstorm has a disadvantage in marine civil wars: list with multiple inceptor units could kill solo techmarines(which carrying important enhancements for ironstorm) very easily. 3" deep strike is almost impossible to screen, even with parking an infiltrator squad nearby.

Why are BT chosen for Ironstorm exactly? Surely not for the additional melta?

1. melta

2. oldborn crusader squad is cheap and effective filler

3. Sword brethren + 1 melee hero in impulsor can make good trade/countercharge
