I would have placed the Soul Drinkers much higher up. Surprised the Carcharadons are 4th; that seems way too high.

I'm still trying to figure out why Crimson Fists aren't part of the Big Twelve.   It might be in there but I'm old, and even trying to magnify that thing I can't read parts of it.

I think because they are a successor, but they don’t have their own rules or unique units, apart from Kantor. Templars have had their own codex in the past, but not CF (I don’t think).

Once you get past the ‘big 12’, it seems to me this list represents the amount of coverage each Chapter has received in the fluff.  Also surprised the Crimson Fists aren’t in the Big 12.  I’ve seen more of them on tabletops than several of the original nine.

Still trying to work out who the ‘big 12’ are though (also old eyes).  They are obviously the original nine loyalists plus the Black Templars and Deathwatch.  Can someone help and name the other one?

I found the original on a Reddit page, saved the image, and used Photo Viewer to zoom in

No. I don't agree.

My favorites are Blood Angels, Black Templars, Grey Knights, Raven Guard, Crimson Fists (okay I agree a *little*).

Hence the basis for my disagreement.

edit: I like Ultramarines too.

The Alpha Legion have never been a chapter, forgoing incidents like the crimson consuls. The Red Corsairs and Legion of the Damned have been chapters

If you check the methodology for OOP, he says he specifically looked for people who described their preferred faction as a chapter

The list is “after the big 12.” So only the CF count in your list. I guess you do agree :)

Where is Alpha Legion?

Alpha Legion are heretic Astartes. This list is just loyalists and none of the other original heretics are in there. Not sure why Red Corsairs are there. Maybe because they came after heresy and started out loyalist, idk.

I missed that part about it being "after" The Big 12? :(  .... thank you for that clarification.

and with that clarification ... Crimson Fists,  Novamarines, Knights of the Raven, Angels Sanguine, and Praetors of Orpheus.

  1. Crimson Fists - Makes sense. One of the original twelve Rogue Trader chapters, had a Codex cover, special characters (Alessio Cortez, Pedro Kantor), an Index Astartes article, etc.
  2. Blood Ravens - Makes sense. Dawn of War brought a lot of people into the hobby.
  3. Flesh Tearers - Makes sense. Another of the original twelve Rogue Trader chapters (though no longer in black and yellow), Gabriel Seth, Index Astartes article. Cool colour scheme, cool backstory. Popular Successor of a popular Legion.
  4. Carcharodons - Very popular. I like both aspects of them (Māori-Marines, and I'm-a-Shark-Marines) though I'm not sure how well I like those two things mixed together.
  5. Lamenters - Classic meme chapter. Popular Cursed Founding Successor of a popular Legion, distinctive scheme with a bit of a challenge to it.
  6. Raptors - Bit of a meme chapter as well, I guess ("they're the ones that use tactics!"). Cool bunch, a lot of nice avenues for conversions.
  7. Minotaurs - FW love, taking the "loyalist Iron Warrior" mantle from the Marines Malevolent, while mixing in a lot of cool Helenic stylings.
  8. Legion of the Damned - I liked them better when they were warp-zombified Fire Hawks than the Ghost Riders they've become, but... still cool.
  9. Black Dragons - Cursed Founding pseudo-heretical legion. Surprised they're so high up, but pleasantly so.
  10. Red Scorpions - FW love... don't know too much about them, honestly.
  11. Executioners - Surprised they're this high. Nothing against them, but... don't strike me as overly notable. FW love I guess. Fafnir Rann image still in his 'Fists colours.
  12. Howling Griffons - Classic chapter, incredibly fun scheme to paint. I'd put them higher, but I'm glad they're this high.
  13. Mentors - One of the OGs, another fun scheme. I love their older lore, and dislike some of their newer lore being at total odds with it.
  14. Exorcists - Cool chapter.
  15. Retributors - I have no idea who this is. (Googles.) Ohhhh, the Astartes Chapter... okay, that's fair. They are a bit boring to look at though.
  16. Scythes of the Emeperor - Cool old footnote that's gotten a great revival in recent times.
  17. Celestial Lions - Great lore, bold scheme.
  18. Emperor's Spears - I've got Spear of the Emperor sitting on my desk so I don't know too much (yet), but they seem neat.
  19. Astral Claws - Traitors, long gone. Probably shouldn't be on the list.
  20. Soul Drinkers - Nice scheme, long running book series... kind of back to being a loyal Chapter but... once renegades...
  21. Silver Templars - A bit of a "who" for me.
  22. Silver Skulls - Rogue Trader classics.
  23. Mantis Warriors - Should be higher.
  24. Dark Kraken - Cool newer chapter, with a solid following.
  25. Iron Snakes - Dan Abnett book Chapter, right? Haven't read them, but I'll assume they're good. Don't care for the scheme.
  26. Sons of the Phoenix - Cool newer chapter, with a solid following. Plus... traitor geneseed spiciness on top?
  27. Storm Wardens - Not too familiar with them. Seem cool, nice scheme.
  28. Sons of Medusa - Classic chapter, nice scheme.
  29. Red Corsairs - Traitors, long gone. Probably shouldn't be on the list. (A second time.)
  30. Genesis Chapter - Big surprise. Like... not sure why they're on the list...

Personally I'd drop Astral Claws and Red Corsairs on technicalities. Silver Templars and Genesis Chapter get a bit of side-eye. Personal contenders for replacement:

  • Mortifactors
  • Emperor's Shadows
  • Charnel Guard

  • Marines Malevolent

  • Yellow Jackets
