THE IRON CHALLENGE!

Recommended Posts

I got at last today the forty Iron Hands 30K helmets to build the marines in the AoD box. However I will make this project special in comparison to my other works in progress (e.g. Necron Rust Buckets).

So the goal is to build and paint the entire AoD box which has been bought in 2022 during two weekends (Saturday & Sunday respectively). I am going to start tomorrow and post my progress at the end of each "working day" in this chat. Of course I will also provide pics of the unbuilt sprues otherwise the Challenge would look fishy.

Other people have been more hardcore in 2022 and tried to build and paint the AoD box during a single weekend but this was setting up oneself for failure. Lets take a look of what will be built:

- Praetor (guy with sword).

- Praetor (guy with axe)

- 20 Tacticals (FW shoulder pads and FW helmets)

- 10 Specialists (FW shoulder pads and FW helmets). These guys will carry missile launchers like their tiny counterparts.

- 10 Specialists (FW shoulder pads and FW helmets). This choice was more difficult but as I love miniguns they will receive rotor cannons.

- 10 Terminators

- Dreadnought. I heard that one looks a bit janky. Hope the posture isn´t too bad.

- Spartan. Geez, I dread building this one. I have heard horror stories that it would take ages to assemble.

There you have it folks. Now I will take pics of the sprues and go to bed as I need my full strength for tomorrow.

Edit:

Painting scheme (all colours from Vallejo unless otherwise noted):

Armour

1. Black

2. Oily Steel (drybrush)

3. Druchii Violet (Citadel, shade, thoroughly coverage)

4. Oily Steel (drybrush)

5. Biel-Tan (Citadel, shade, irregular splotches)

6. Oily Steel (drybrush)

7. Umber Wash (wash, not too strong)

7. Silver (drybrush)

Note: Biel-Tan is a strong colour. To break up the splotches two stages of subsequent drybrushing was required. The end result is an oily sheen on the metallic armour.

Martian Soil (all materials/colours from Vallejo unless otherwise noted:

1. Red Oxide Paste (let dry over night)

2. Umber Wash (wash)

3. Squig Orange (Citadel; drybrush)

The first step to greatness has been achieved. I woke up early on a weekend thanks to the birds. First thing to do will be to put the resin parts (FW products) in a soap bath. Normally i would do this over the night but this would be cheating. I think it would also be neat to have more pics in general so there will also pictures taken during the day. Another thought struck me: There still hasn´t a decision been made, if the Tacticals should either get bare-bones bolters, bayonets or the chainsaw option. If you are an advocate of any option you should feel free to voice your opinion here. Don´t worry your response won´t come too late as I will attach the bolters late in the day.

The birds woke me up again. Such benevolent creatures. I wanted to post pics around midnight but my old bones were too tired. But enough with the waffling and straight to the pics:

Saturday (13th of April):

And now the important part. What have I managed to do with the sprues on a single day? Sadly not much.

The point is building is the aspect of the hobby which I loathe. The only types of models which are nice to assemble for me are either the LI models or  those ultra-modern Primaris. They build themselves. But the other stuff takes ages to build. Maybe I should ask the birds to help build the minis for me. This way it will come along much faster.

As you can all do math pretty well with this kind of progress the aim of finishing everything in four days can´t be fulfilled although I won´t give up. There are now this Sunday ten Terminators to paint as I banished the clippers out of my LOS. That should be pretty easy to accomplish and only the OSL effect on the eye lenses and the sword will take time. Maybe there will time at the end to build something which is less time consuming like the dread or the characters. We will see.

The bases will be done with Vallejo Oxide Paste. This stuff needs to be treated with a hair dryer otherwise it won´t be ready in the evening. Back to work.

Update:

The following pics document the state in which the built models were at the end of last Sunday (14th of April):

You will notice that I overcame my dread after all and managed to build at least in component form the contemptor dreadnought although this meant not painting anything apart from applying black in a smooth fashion. It was also a bit annoying to discover the lack of space to deploy the havoc missile launcher on the top of the dread. The missile application needs to be added probably to one of the shoulders instead.

And today we have Saturday the 20th of April and the birds are chirping once again. The goal for today is to build the dread and apply lots of colour to the terminators and the sarcophagus on legs. Lets see how far the work will proceed.

Update:

This has been done on the 20th of April:

The contemptor has finally been assembled. This was a tricky undertaking and it took me quite some time so all the armour on all models has only been painted to stage 3 of my scheme. The paint scheme will be added to my first post for the sake of completeness. And you will notice three additions to the group. What are these supposed to be? Well, they are Cyber Familiars and as GW doesn´t sell them (how dare you IH players ask for specific models$#?!) Reaper was the recruiting company from which they hailed. They are called "Buzz", "Zap" and "Wrench".

Idea for the dreadnought pose and it´s weaponry. He will be included whenever I chose the Rite of War "Head of the Gorgon". IH Infantry in my deployment zone gets a buff and when I remember correctly it was Stubborn. So you have 20 stubborn Tacticals and the dread acts as a bodyguard for the squad. When something tough hit them in melee he wades in with his close combat weapon. Otherwise he stands there upright as an immovable object, a tower so to speak, and calmy picks his targets for his calibrated lascannons. As the plan is to not move around much the range of this laser weapon is the best pick. You can see he is just hosing a group of enemies with his steady lascannon beam as he moves his big gun from right to left. As I like to put upgrades on my vehicles he also got the havoc missile launcher. Should he ever find himself in a situation where enemy grunts could bog him down a couple of "BOOOMS" from his rockets should help him out.

This has been done on the 21st of April:

All the armour has been finished to the last stage.

This has been done on 27th & 28th of April:

Nothing. On Saturday I was at a Red Lion Convention (wargaming convention) in my region and bought lots of stuff. Models from Brother Vinni suited for the upcoming Hobgoblin R&F from the Gaslands author, palm trees for my Catachans (bought from a Dutch retailer who got them from China; though 24 years too late but who cares) and the book "Last Days" from Ash Barker (youtube GMG). There were other hobby materials you got for free by simply paying the entrance fee. So a day well-spent. On Sunday I was busy with other stuff. Next weekend we will continue with the Iron Hands.
