Any vehicles/units/weapons you prefer because of IRL reasons?

Miniguns.

Two of my Oldhammer dreadnoughts have an assault cannon and two of my four landspeeders have them too. One of my two specialist/heavy weapon squads for 30K will receive rotor cannons as well. I even adopted an ancient Baal Predator into my 40K IH force by using 3rd 40K vehicle construction rules. It has of course twin-linked assault cannons.

Edit:

I almost forgot to mention the classic: Terminator in Space Hulk wielding an assault cannon. You will be falling in love with this gun when you have slain dozens of genestealers with it in tight corridors. FULL-AUTO! BRRRRRRRRRRRT!

Imperial Guard super heavy tanks; they must be heavily influenced by the German Maus and Ratt tanks, and as WW2 history is another interest of mine, I love the Baneblades.

Unfeasible war machines for the win!

Assault cannons and generally multi-barreled rotary weapons systems for me.

I've just always thought they were really neat machines. And there's something plain cool about a cluster of spinning barrels with an absurdly high rate of fire.

For some reason the modern rotary guns don’t appeal to me too much but the Hotchkiss rotary guns hold a place in my heart lol.

If I had to guess I’d say they’re inspired more by char1B and the soviet heavies/super heavies multi-weaponness, while sheer size inspiration probably does come from the Nazi super heavies.

Yeah I'd definitely say there is inspiration from many a tank. I completely forgot about those while posting! Doh!

I was thinking about why I enjoy the autocannon so much for my guard, and best I can come up with, it’s an extremely familiar system for me with a background as a mk38 tech/operator.

so anyone else have any in game things they have preferences for, for real life reasons?

I used to think of them as Bofors m/36s.  The metal, 2nd Ed Ig-models kinda had that clip-load, look.. And it hit a bit like I imagined it would.. Or something.  But that was then. Not sure now. I guess it is more similar to some smaller calibre, faster-firing thing?

As for my favs.. I liked white phosphorous grenades, and frag grenades, All good for getting rid of annoying stuff, one way or another.. Would love to throw a couple of WP into a nest of Tyranid critterz.. We had some pretty heavby ones with a decent ammount of explosives too.

And in addition to that, I used what would be a carbine version of an autogun I guess. Nothing fancy, being recon of a flavour.. Well, also used AT-4s, and they can also be used on alot of things.. What would that be in game? Like a krak grenade? the krak missile seems like it nicks the spot of something heavier, more like a TOW?

However.. if needed, I could request mines, of various types. You could have fun with them. Some very heavy but they would get the job done. We don´t have that in game, do we? There was this beauty with a 10kg explosive mass.. Would mess even bit things up nicely...

Boltguns, because I often wish I had one when I'm at a meeting at work.

I know that feeling..  And then there is the chainsword fantasy.. Or the heavy flamer. Sometimes I feel we are too civilized..

Yeah, the old school models with the top feed, but they were magazine fed rather than magazine

AT-4 and similar weapons are krak missiles imho, I don’t think GW has anything in game yet that’s equivalent to a TOW.

we have melta mines, and last edition for the whole two months guard had a 9th Ed codex Catachans had a special rule for placing a minefield iirc.

True. I just don´t think GW ever not it right with missile launchers. Sometimes they look like actual missiles, sometimes more like a Carl Gustav. They seema  bit clueless. Yeah i guess the missile launcher is more like it - AT-4 is a one-shot CG anyways.. But the old Cadian with a massive missile is weird to me, compared to the same time variant the Space Marines got. Atleast they had actual HE and AT rounds (HEAT style).

It really bugged me when the late 6th Ed WHFB Dwarfs got their plastic cannon and they got a shell, instead of a round ball. Did not fit the old stuff, did not fit the rules, at all. Missile launchers are also all over the shop that way.

Speaking of Charlie G.. That´s another fun system..

Aha - the Catachans still have such rules, or had.. My best buddie used to play them and we tried the 3rd Ed Codex a bit. A nightmare. And that brings up shotguns..

IRL, I'm a bit of a sword guy. C'tan Phase Swords or Xenophase blades are intriguing. Powersword is pretty cool. Not sure I'm down with the chainsword or Eviscerator- they would be heavier than the others, and probably at least a little noisy too.

I like the idea of a Force Sword too, but you've got to be psychic to make them work, and sadly I am not.

Tbh I prefer this new goose looking launcher even if it’s not technically a missile launcher lol.

the kreig basically have a bulky RPG as well.

yeah I’m not sure how to do shotguns well.

maybe two profiles, one buck one slug

buckshot 18” A2 S3 AP0 D2

<assault> +1 S at half range or less

slug 24” A S5 AP-1 D3

beyond that I’ve got no clue.

Being a tank nerd there are so many things I can think of from the FW IG range, especially anything that scratches the itch of 20s/30s tank design IN SPACE. I absolutely adore the crazy stuff that came from the interwar period, and a lot of the FW tanks really look like they belong to that school of thought. The sadly-OOP Centaur is probably one of my favourites, though. It's basically a Universal Carrier except 40K flavoured, and I do love me some tankettes.

Other contenders would include:
>The Stormhammer (interwar multi-turreted tanks like the T-35 are cool, if completely impractical, and the Stormhammer is basically the lovechild of one of those and a Baneblade.)

>The old, old, OLD FW Mars-Pattern Baneblade (whilst it's IIRC a SOD to assemble and a little crude next to modern kits, I actually find it a more appealing visual design than the more common Lucius pattern. The gun mantlets in particular remind me of early forays into cast components on tanks.)

>The Gorgon (landing craft on tracks. Ridiculous? Yes. Awesome? Also yes.)

>The Malcador family (it screams interwar, looking like the Char B1 Bis and the TOG II's blessed offspring, with some heritage from the Medium Mark C Hornet. It's gloriously impractical with its limited-traverse "turret" (or plethora of  heavy bolters if you go with the Defender!) but it looks impractical in a plausible, evolutionary stage of tank design way rather than a "Who let Cawl into Guilliman's drinks cabinet?" way.)

I've always thought grenade launchers were neat IRL, and I enjoy using them in video games, so anytime I do guard they gotta have them. It just feels like a guard weapon anyways, I never felt like mass plasma was thematic for most regiments.

I am also a mace enjoyer, so I tend to use them when they are on a kit: paragons, Sacresancts, aspiring champions, etc.

Being a IRL gun guy, I've always had an affinity for auto guns. They are also the iconic weapon for Lost and the Damned, so that gets more points from me. Minus the lack of stocks, I really enjoy the Novitiate autogun design and used them for my traitor guard
