Why would they do a pay rise instead? They would be tied to paying that same amount each year as wages won't go down...

Bonuses can often be better than a pay rise regards tax and stuff like student loans, i know my last job had a separate pay and bonuses package even when the bonuses were just cash :D 

Not to mention some of these payments from GW have been like, a third of the average staff members wage up front, great for buying titans lol.

This won't be an either or situation though. They'll have this bonus (of which a decent percentage, if not all, will be tax free) and they will have a pay rise as well. A company the size of GW in the UK won't get away with not giving annual pay rises based on inflation, especially if they are making decent profit.

I’d bet money this is in addition to a cost of living annual increase.  Most companies do that even in the US.  Not all, but most.

Yeah I would imagine, but as anyone who has ever worked a job knows, cost of living increases are never commensurate with actual inflation.

 

The bonus is nice, for sure. It'll help people out.  Everyone should also want everyone else to be compensated more. Rising tide and all that.

I've worked for a bigger UK company than GW and they very much did get away with below-inflation salary increases when it suited them.

 

I don't doubt that GW have annual pay rises but I'm sceptical that the amounts necessarily relate to inflation.

No business I have ever worked for has mirrored inflation with incremental payrises, it;s always been a couple of percent behind.

This is actually quite the opposite. Student Loans will take a higher amount than if the bonus were spread over a salary rise and any Universal Credit that employees receive (and considering the chronically low wages of many GW employees I'm sure there are plenty in receipt of UC) will be wiped out by this bonus as well.

I've never actually met an employee of the company (store or headquarters) that actually earns a low enough wage to qualify for UC (Jobseeker's or Housing Benefit, at least), as the cut-off for that is around the £20,000ish mark and that's below the standard wage at the company by a few thousand pounds now. The larger issue is Child Benefit, which is more often than not wiped out by a spouse / partner's earnings anyway.

God forbid you work in the education sector as well, where many schools and universities have (rather psychotically) decided to tie their wages to the NHS.

Who is paid a "chronically low wage" at GW that you know of? Bearing in mind that the context of this thread is GW employees receiving a blanket payment of several thousand pounds...

It's really not dependant on what area you work in. Retail for certain is as a single staff store manager.
