So I have got my Pariah Nexus cards and a shiny buff to the Champions of Russ. I will be taking them out for a try out tonight in a 1500 point battle against Heretic Astartes (no idea what flavour).

Champions of Russ

95  Judiciar with Black Death

180 Bladeguard Veterans x 6

240 Land Raider

130 Predator Annihilator

220 Land Raider Crusader

140 Blood Claws x 10

30  WG PL Power fist and Combi weapon

90  Ragnar

80 Intercessors x 5 Thunder Hammer and AGL

100 Heavy Intercessors x 5

90 Wulfen, 4 x WH/SS

100 Infiltrators x 5 with Helix Gauntlet

1495 Total

OK so the plan is pretty simple. The 2 Land Raiders roll forward and their melee squads jump out to charge targets of opportunity. The Heavy Intercessors babysit my home Objective. The Infiltrators are there to screen my midfield and tag Objectives. The Intercessors will probably start off in the Land Raider with the Bladeguard for cover and jump out later to try and sticky Objectives. The Wulfen will probably start in Tactical Reserve and come on from a table edge during play to threaten something.

I am trying to decide what Saga to start with active. I am leaning towards Saga of the Bear as this one is quite hard to activate during the game and an army-wide 6+++ is never going to not come in useful.

The Judiciar with Black Death has a decent shot of activating Saga of the Beast Hunter as he gets Dev Wounds on Monsters or Vehicles on a 4+.

Warrior Born could be harder to activate although the Judiciar does have Precision so is in with a chance.

The Blood Claws and Ragnar really want to be charging every turn so I would really like to upgrade the Wolf Guard Pack Leader to a Lt. This would give the Blood Claws Lethal Hits as well as Fall Back and Charge, both of which are bonuses they really like. I just need to find another 30 points and I am not sure where to get them. I could downgrade the Infiltrators to Scouts and they would do a similar job.

Alternatively I could proxy the Blood Claws as Assault Intercessors. Their wound rerolls are always active and don't depend on getting the charge.

I'm gearing up for some CoR testing as well.  Actually excited about something I felt bleh about for a long time.

Killing characters with Ragnar can be easy.  Just need to epic challenge after you charge in.

Precision attacks only require LOS...don't have to be basing the character model you want to kill

If you want to maximize the black death keep the judiciar with assault intercessors so you can reroll wounds and fish for those 4+ dev wounds

Don’t forget that Repulsor pts went down and its transport capacity went up to 14.

I really like the Repulsor but I think it works better for shooty squads. I love my Land Raiders for melee squads.

This list could use an iron priest. 3 big tanks could benefit from 1 or 2. +1 to hit would be beneficial for the land raider that isn’t shooting at the oath target.

That is a good point, I think an earlier draft did have an IP. The question is, what do I drop to squeeze him in? If I dropped the Wulfen, that would lose me a cheap beatstick but provide enough points for an IP and also to upgrade the WGPL to a LT. That is not a bad idea.

Champions of Russ

60 Iron Priest

95  Judiciar with Black Death

180 Bladeguard Veterans x 6

240 Land Raider

130 Predator Annihilator

220 Land Raider Crusader

140 Blood Claws x 10

65  Lieutenant with Power Fist and Master Crafted bolter

90  Ragnar

80 Intercessors x 5 Thunder Hammer and AGL

100 Heavy Intercessors x 5

100 Infiltrators x 5 with Helix Gauntlet

1500 Total

OK so here is the revised list. I think that the Lt adds a lot of the Blood Claw squad and is probably worth the loss of the Wulfen.

As it turned out, my opponent was sick yesterday so I ended up playing someone else with my Eldar but a good time was had.

Just got back from the game and the CoR list above performed well. I was fighting against CSM and my opponent conceded after T3. His rough list was as below.

Abby with 5 Chosen

Master of Possession with 10 Posessed

Predator Annihilator

Forge Fiend

Venom Crawler

Sorcerer in Terminator armour with 5 Terminators

10 Cultists

He did his best but didn't have enough dedicated anti-tank to tackle 2 Land Raiders (although Abaddon made a serious dent in one in melee). I popped smoke on T1 to survive his opening salvo and then took out his Predator.

He made some good moves including teleporting his Terminators behind my lines and making a 9" charge. Abaddon and the possessed made short work of the BGVs. But with my tanks mostly intact and hard to tackle,  I could move where I wanted and use my firepower to soften up targets or charge them as I needed.

Overall I am still ambivalent about CoR. I started with Saga of the Bear active but the army-wide 6+++ was not as effective as I hoped. I did manage to trigger Warrior Born when my Lt killed the Sorcerer but by then the game was in the bag. CoR is better than it was but is ultimately still a "win more" mechanic.

How did the Blood Claws perform? I'm torn between them and Assault Intercessors.

I found they did very well. I like that their bonuses apply whenever they charge. AIs are better when targeting units on an Objective. However I did build them accordingly. I had a 10-man squad with Ragnar and also the Lt to ensure that I could fall back and Charge to keep my bonuses active. Off the charge, they are definitely worse than AIs. I like using big melee bricks so this suits my style of play.

But a lot of competitive players are having success with 5-man AIs, usually led by a suitably punch character like Ragnar, a tooled-up Captain or even a Judiciar. MSU is a different but very valid style of play. I am happy to run Blood Claws as I have plenty painted. Whether we will still have access to them in 11th edition remains to be seen. If I were starting from scratch, I would be thinking more about AIs.

One unit that performed well was the Predator Annihilator. At 30 points cheaper than a Lancer, it performs the anti-tank role well and has 3 strong shots rather than 2 (as well as the one-off Hunter KiIller Missile). It contributed to the destruction of the opposing Annihilator and both Daemon engines. The only place it struggles slightly is against T12+ targets where the Lancer has a clear edge.

My invitational list is due in a few days.

I have near zero odds of winning event with sister meta so I'm going for spoiler to hunt anti sister meta (BA etc.)

I have my core SW list but am not sure what detachment.

I can run CoR and yolo or gladius or vanguard with more survival tricks

The survivial tricks replace LRR + impulsor with 2x repulsors

Anyone else have battle experience to share about CoR before I make final decision?

Which sisters detachment did he run?

BoF I think its called.  The salamander one.  He had 1st turn and used scout + advance and hop out strat to put stuff in my face.  Then celestine and seraphym advance and fly...the detachment is nuts

I just finished another scrimmage against meta BA and it was another mosh pit in the middle but I won 59-41.  Basically tabled him turn 4.  The VV with 4++ and 5+ FNP from a priest take forever to kill.  I really underestimated their survivability.  I set up a Murderfang pinball where I had 3 units to kill but I never finished off the damn VV to consolidate 6" to the next unit.

Here is my list.  It is officially submitted.  I am expecting to face a BA and went with a counter melee plan

I basically start with Warrior Saga every game and conserve my CP as much as possible

My Champions of Russ!!!

I was hoping to draw a Group stage with BA or some other anti sister faction.

I was instead placed in a 2xSisters group stage LOL

This may not end well

Gru's Plan Meme | Can't defeat Sisters but can beat other factions; Build a BA specific counter list; Placed in a pod with 2 Sisters and no BA; Placed in a pod with 2 Sisters and no BA | image tagged in memes, gru's plan | made w/ Imgflip meme maker

Ragnar and the BGV go together.  I used to run Ragnar with AI but it was always 1 usage then Ragnar dies

BGV let me use reroll 1s to hit for Ragnar and save oath elsewhere...and they are tanky enough that it requires a strong commitment from my opponent to kill Ragnar.

That is good for me because either 1) Ragnar and BGV survive and I get another turn of his advance + charge rampage or 2) Whatever he used to kill Ragnar is now vulnerable to my counter attack

Ragnar + Captain Black Death ride in the same transport...so Captain Black Death is always nearby the next turn for an advance + charge counter attack

how did your game go?

Could not play unfortunately. IRL issue came up and I was forced to cancel. I hope I can reschedule soon, my regular opponent and I are both itching for a game, but summer time is a real headache to fit games of 40K!

Love the list Karhedron, nice blend of old and new Wolves!

I've gotten a few games in so far with CoR and having a blast. I played an RTT last weekend and went 1-2, I got beat pretty hard by Black Templars and Imperial Knights, beat Necrons. In pick up games at the shop I've been able to beat Tau and Eldar (actually beat the guy who went 3-0 at the same rtt with the lists we took). Judiciar w/Black Death and Assault Intercessors slaps, I did 16 mortal wounds to an Avatar

Still tinkering on lists design and what characters to take. This still seems like the most important piece of the puzzle when building. Yeah, scouts, battleine etc are important but for us it really matters what characters you take in what combination of units and how you wield them.

Out of interest, what are people taking as their starting Saga? I started off with Bear as it is quite hard to trigger and I thought a 6+++ would always come in handy. But in practice it felt underwhelming and I think Warrior Born would have added some valuable heft to my opening charges.

On the other hand, I was playing Imperial Knights earlier in the week and the 6+++ came in handier than I expected. Should I give the Bear a few more games testing before I abandon it?

I have some experience with black templar vows which is largely the same.

The fnp is powerful. It does help some against dmg 2 vs 2 wounded stuff and such. And it works for every model in your army. So tanks become tankier and such.

However i have had some succes with sustained hits. Lethal hits i have largely ignored as you can get that from lieutenants where you want it.

But sustained and lethal is always good together!

I think with COR, for me, I simply don't have enough melee units to really get the best out of the detachment. I have plenty of the 'standard' Marine stuff in my collection, but I steered clear of BGV and I can't really justify TWC in my successor's lore. The most melee that is consistently in my list is 10x Assault Intercessors, either split into MSU or taken as a full squad. At current, Firestorm or Vanguard look like the best bets for more all-rounder Wolves lists, at least to my eyes.

That said, I think the buffs look good. But, they definitely require you to skew towards melee, either in the form of transport-borne or jump pack T4-T5 guys, Thunderwolves, or Dreadnoughts. The delivery of the first is definitely helped by Relentless Assault, though. Problem remains getting there and surviving the shooting on the way in. I like to trade at all ranges, myself. Hopefully, once our codex comes around, we get a Grey Hunters update or upgrade sprue that will allow us to mix bolt rifles with chainswords.
