Any other old timers here still?

Recommended Posts

Yeah, still around.. Was on the Ezboard but took me a month to re-join the newer one. Away for service iirc..

Doesn´t feel that long ago either..  I know how Bjorn the Fell-handed feel now, waking up every now and then..

More fantasy than 40k for me but not just choppas and arrerz.. But mostly Specialist games in the 40k universe over actual 40k for me.. (Not a fan of the rules since.. 4th Ed

And i had a long hiatus, or a few.. Playing 2nd Ed Flames of War for one..

Apparently I joined up in 2003... I would have still been in university back then! Good to know I was being productive.

I was a Portent / Warseer frequenter mainly but once that forum started going down for extended periods of time I came over here more permanently. I sometimes looked at DakkaDakka but I don't really think about those places anymore.

I also agree with all you crusty old grognards, Reddit is a poor substitute for forums, it doesn't feel like there's a sense of community, just a constant flow of posts. I'd much rather follow a thread here or stumble upon an interesting project log than just have random posts spewed onto my phone.

I joined this hallowed place in 2009, but had been lurking and using the space marine painter for a good while before then.

I actually started the hobby with Space Crusade and my brother's collection of early White Dwarfs at about age 5, then jumped feet-first into the hobby as a teenager after making my own Chapter(s) of Space Marines on Dawn of War. I had a tactical squad, about five paints, a single detail brush, and absolutely no painting skill whatsoever, and found it one of the most enjoyable things I'd ever done. I basecoated those models with skull white and a detail brush, which I thought was fine and dandy until I got a Rhino to transport them with.

I did the "logical" thing of buying a spraycan, but not buying any larger brushes. Painting that Rhino convinced me my army would have exactly one vehicle in it, until I got a Land Raider Crusader as a Christmas present.

Since then I've slowly but surely been writing stuff about the fictional exploits of my plastic dudes, and even more slowly painting them.

...I've also been quickly acquiring more little plastic dudes to paint, from many factions, and can probably paint models for the next three years without buying any more. Unfortunately, GW keep bringing out kill teams I like, so that's unlikely!

Yeah I really liked old Portent too.  Had the Blood Claw username - and hotmail. But managed to lose it.. That was a bummer, for me.. lol

Never understood why proper forums became unpopular (?). A thread for a topic, that can be dug up with necromancy.. Instead of thise flow.. Kids.. But seriously..To me it would be like eating the wiener out of a hot dog, then the bun, then the ketchup, then the mustard.. ok not the best metaphor but it would bug me as much..

Depending on your definition I might fit the bill. I started playing WFB back in '94 and I've been here on the B&C on and off for 10 years or so

Good old days.. I only have White Dwarf memories and watching some WHFB matches from that era, joined WHFB when 6th Ed dropped.. Kinda glad I started then. Good time to.

I got the 40k experience with the "magic" phase and wargear cards instead..Some.. Over the top combos seems like cool memories, from all those Magoc Cards though..

I remember those cards. Specifically, I remember an opponent losing an entire army to the Virus card - it was a fairly packed-in ork horde, so every time the virus jumped to a new unit, it infected several others. A few units survived once, but then got hit again (and again) until they succumbed.

As I recall, we decided to restart once a fair  hunk of his army had died, but kept rolling just to see what would happen.

(And to answer the original post, I'm 20+ years on here, and 35+ in the hobby - all the way back to the original Rogue Trader.)

Ah yeah.. I shared an Ork army with a buddy. Had a smaller part of it and we played together.. iirc we had a few games between Dark Millennium and the Ork Codex and suffered that.. Before the Vaccine Squig popped in. And then we never usedVirus outbreak or a Virus Grenade anymore. It was just.. Stupid, lol. Against those it affected..

Fun-ish.. And fun memory but..

I was this ork player once.

Took half of my army out and even that was luck on my part because the last ork to die only had a radius of 1" around him to Infekt the next ork who stood 2" away. If he would have get cought I wouldn't have an army left.

We just stopped using Virus infection as a card and forbit Virus bomb entirely.

But 2ed 40k is still my favorite.

Yeah, used "correctly", it is really fun. The rules live on, I mean if you don´t actually play them, in Shadow War Armageddon too (Necromunda rules kidna but..). Which is not a bad little skirmish game. Apart from a lackluster campaign maybe.

Those complaining it took too long or were too complicated.. I don´t agree. 1500p gave pretty decent forces that took about as long as was fun. I played on weekends, took the afternoon-evening on some sundays and met up with my friends in the local club and set up who met who. Then afterwards, mCD and some coffee and apple pie.. Great times. I want games to feel special too, not play several times a week..

I played a game of 2ed last year. He didn't play for 20 years, I was also a little rusty but still it took us only around 4 hours to play. And we goofed around a lot and it included preparing the table and all that so a 1500 points game should be around 2-3 hours if both know the rules, depending a little bit on what armies play against each other and if big close combats happen.

I find that there's a sweet spot - too many games in too short a space of time, and they switch from fun to chore; too few games, or too long an interval in-between, and I find that the game gains unwanted significance.

For example, I had a period of playing perhaps every three months at best, sometimes six months between games. Every game became 'the only game I'll play for ages', and the result took on far to much mental significance - if I lost, I was 'on a loss' for months on end. Winning became far too important.

So I find I enjoy my games when they're fairly frequent (I think my ideal is about fortnightly), which means individual results matter far less, and there's more space for fun, experimentation, narrative ideas and the like.

At this point in life, the hobby aspect has taken precedence over the gaming aspect, what with kids, their extracurricular activities, a full time job, etc.

Its been like this for almost a decade now, but it help bring significance to the quality of the paint job, any modeling and conversion work, and world building whereas before I would buy a box, hastily build the models and plop them on a base to get a game in ASAP.

I’ve learned to live in the moment more than worry when the next time will be that I have a chance to play. For me, it’s the journey getting to the point that I can play that is worthwhile more than the game itself nowadays.

Yeah for me that is not too bad, even four hours. Used to know stats and wargear and probably still does! But nice to double-check to be sure.. Same with the rules really but need more checking up for less commonly used ones.

Yeah, nice sum up I think. Nice point about playing decently often it does not matter that much about win or lose. But i have stopped caring alot anyways.. Playing mostly greenskins makes it feel even less important, it is still fun just caising mayhem and adding some ncie little fun happeings to their long and "glorious" history..

yeah. Kinda feel the same. 99% is modelling, painting and writing/reading stuff, or so it feels.. Wish i could play more. But it feels very special and extra fun when it happens....

I've been here since 2014, as Eilio_Tiberius, and as this account name (I've changed my username three times over those years lol, always one of the two). Still love this place, but I think Reddit has taken a little bit from sites such as the B&C.

Dang spot on the same for me. Shifted from a focus on building(minimal painting) and playing/list building in a competitive environment to essentially very little time at all for the hobby due to life. The little time I do get is spent on painting(dramatically improved) and narrative/relaxed leaning gameplay. The last thing I played extensively was blackstone fortress and I enjoyed that more than the last 10th ed 40k game I played.

I’m still a bit disappointed that the group project that we had planned on here for a “campaign” or story line revolving around M35 fell apart some years back. That’s when I really went crazy with my Chaos Knights, but it helped me get deep into the lore side of my hobby and come up with my own canon and I’ve been building off of that and continuing ever since.
