NECRON UNIT OF THE WEEK SERIES

Welcome to the Necron Unit of the Week series for 10th edition! Each week will see a different unit from the Codex, Imperial Armour, and Legends datasheets featured for discussion. The goal here is to discover and chronicle tactics for the featured unit so that new players and veterans alike can use this database to inform their strategies with the wider knowledge of the forum. The game of Warhammer 40,000 is ever changing though, and as the rules evolve throughout the edition everyone should feel free to return to older threads with the release of new FAQs/errata, changes in points values, information gathered from games played, and of course the Codex being released. These threads are also great places for newcomers to the Necrons to post their questions about tactics related to the featured units.

Please note that the purpose of this series is not to lament what the current meta deems “ineffective”, or that another unit “does it better”. Those units will get their own threads.

This week’s unit is:

Orikan the Diviner

What Detachment do you take Orkian in?

Do you attach him to Immortals or Warriors?

Has The Stars Are Right been useful?

Do you also attach a Royal Warden or Noble to the unit?

I very recently picked up Orikan, it's actually my next 40K project. I haven't used the model before but I was thinking of running him in Hypercrypt Legion and attaching him to a squad of Immortals. I usually have a Warden attached to one Immortal squad and an Overlord attached to the other. I'll be watching the thread looking for tips!

Just got him as a birthday gift from a buddy- he did pretty well in a gauss blaster Immortals squad. I had two other tesla Immortal squads headed up with Shroud Overlords/Technomancers, so he was with the slower blaster squad to give them some invuln protection. It worked out ok, and he managed to smash two Mega-nobs when the Immortals counter-charged them. I don't know if he is better or worse than a Technomancer in a squad, I think it depends if you are going to be facing AP-2 or better weaponry rather than just a lot of hits where FNPs might be useful.

I haven't really been that fussed on Orikan, paying 80pts to give a unit a 4+ invul and a bit more melee punch, just doesn't really seem worth it, I'd rather just take 5 more Immortals to have the extra firepower. The one time super attack is pretty neat, but even so, once per game you doing an average of 3D3 Dev Wounds, in close combat, which isn't nothing, but when that's the only other thing he brings to the table, it's not a lot.

The place I think he might be the best is in the standard Awakened Dynasty attached to a normal Warrior Squad. He'd then be giving them all +1 to hit as well as making their save invul rather than a 3/4 with the Immortals. Even so, I think there are better characters to run for this.

Sadly, Orikan's a pass for me outside narrative games as he and/or Trayzen are just a lot of fun to throw into a campaign as a chaotic element just doing their own thing.
