I'm back to working on stuff for Adepticon, and am currently adding on to my already existing Salamanders for the Phyrix narrative campaign. I've been having fun making a unique list and writing up some of its story background, and I wanted to hear from others what sorts of army lists they have come up where you build it either over a campaign or to have the unit selections make sense to match its background.

This was more of a tongue-in-cheek list but I signed up for a local heresy event a couple of years ago that was based on a siege of a planet with the traitors besieging a loyalist garrison. As I was playing Traitor Iron Warriors and it was a siege I wanted to lean into their speciality as much as possible so when I was writing my list I only allowed myself to use units that had the word ‘Siege’ in their name.

 

So I ended up with:

Breachers (because they have siege shields which I acknowledge was a bit of a stretch but I had to have some troops)

Tyrant Siege Terminators

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought

Vindicator Siege tanks

Typhon Siege tank

 

I didn’t own all of those when I wrote the list so I had a bit of a shopping list. (Un)fortunately the event was cancelled so I never got to build/play the list but it was fun writing it.

 

My Word Bearers were originally made to be a void/siege warfare specialist company. I started as you can imagine with breachers, two full squads with meltaguns and meltabombs to open door and destroy major obstacles. Following this theme the force is also currently wholly lacking in vehicles, as I at the time figured I'd mainly be doing Zone Mortalis. With time I have moved away from that limitation, so I imagine some Vindicators may be in my future.

 

I had this idea that I wanted to have choices from every slot so I gave the Fast Attack choices a onceover, and I settled on making a Seeker squad. Although rather than doing the usual backline sniper archetype I settled on them all having melta bombs, and them being an advanced infilitration and saboutage unit. They have seen limited success, mostly hunting down a land raider once. But I enjoyed making them fit my theme. They also stand out quite a bit being the only MKIV in a sea of MKIII.

Current force I'm working on is a group of Salamanders Drop Site Massacre survivors that got separated and answered distress calls from the Phyrix system. The highest ranked officer of the group, Praevian Barai, made the call for them to help the local defenses in anyway they can. Rousing the automata under his care whilst other officers worked on enlisting Solar Auxilia defenders, they do what they can to prepare for the worst. Meanwhile, a Vindicare assassin and a Custodes Shield Captain and 5 spearmen are sent by Malcador to assassinate several warlords in the system to give the beleagured loyalists assistance. They join up with Barai under the cover of assistance, but their orders take priority, and must keep in mind that the Salamanders, no matter how noble they seem, could also be swayed by Horus' vision.

 

Basically aimed to incorporate as many loyalist elements as I could to give it the feeling of desperate pooling of resources: praevian to lead mechanicum units, overseer to lead solar auxilia, the last HQ taken by the Vindicare assassin, and a small Legio Custodes allied detachment. 

I have been working on a narrative Siege of Terra list, 1k pts of IF with two 500pt allied forces of BA and WS.

 

 I have avoided heavy vehicles, or Dreadnoughts, to simulate attrition, for the Imperial Fists specifically I also selected uneven squad sizes to further push that theme of attrition. All the squads are pretty fully kitted out, to depict depleted forces that nonetheless have been able to pick better equipment. The IF veteran squad has an eclectic mix of weapons rather than a synergistic single load out, again to push the Siege theme of various Legionaries ending up in random groupings due to the chaos of battle. The recon squad has a mix of weapons for the same reason. It’s a themed force that is not likely to perform great on tabletop but could provide a lot of opportunities for fun paint jobs and conversions.

 

The White Scars are a small hunter killer assault force that are showing up to provide support and will melt away once they are no longer needed.

 

The Blood Angels are ‘fresh’ reinforcements that are arriving to reinforce the under-strength Imperial Fists. These might have been Inductii at the beginning of the Siege but would be considered full Legionaries by this point. Their leader is hoping to find Traitor commanders to eliminate.

 

Maybe one day I will try to get this force done. The appeal is doing lots of different Loyalists,  so I would get to try out a little

bit of everything, and it would make a change from my Sons of Horus.
