Hello, all,

I've composed a custom space marine chapter and I have minis to put in a diorama I'm trying to build. However, their colors are  purple primarily with gold trim and accents, but i'm looking for more colors to put in, or to change. The reason I ask is because purple and gold are the colors of many already established chapters. For lore reasons, I've also decided to paint the left shoulderpad black to change something up, but it still feels too similar to real things. Any criticisms or suggestions are appreciated, and I can provide images once I get back home to my painting station. Thanks! I will also update this forum with an image of the scheme using the space marine painter once I get home.

Edit: I have two houses, and I'm at my dad's house this week and my painting station is at moms so the mini images may take a moment if this post lasts that long. apologies. :P

Edit 2: here's the SM mini image, turns out I had one already. (Imagine the shoulderpad as black)

Bone/cream colour goes quite nicely with purple - perhaps for the helmets?

Don’t worry though; if you like the colour scheme you have then it doesn’t matter if another chapter has used it. Even if you look at the original 18 legions in the Horus Heresy, you’ve got Dark Angels, Iron Hands and Raven Guard all in black, then Blood Angels, World Eaters and Thousand Sons all in red, then you’ve got World Eaters and White Scars in white etc.

What I’m trying to say is that repetition is all over the place so it doesn’t matter if you use the same colour as something else that exits. That’s gonna happen no matter what colour you pick.

Your models look good by the way :) they’ll really pop with a few highlights I reckon.

Purple & Gold plus Black Shoulder Pad reads as Loyalist Emperor's Children who've painted out their Chapter symbol.

If that's not the vibe you're going for and it's currently too dark of a colour scheme, then maybe switch the Cloth Colour and some of the Detailing over to a lighter contrasting colour, maybe a Blue perhaps, or go over the Purple in a brighter Purple shade in order to make the models "Pop" more.

Alternatively, if you want a Darker colour scheme and you like the Purple base and the Darker Cloth, maybe swap out the metal colour?
If you base the Shoulder Pad you want Black and the Metals on the armour in Leadbelcher and then go over it with Black Legion contrast you get a nice Metallic Black which would go well with the Cloth colour and the Shade of Purple you have.

EDIT: Also, consider what Chapter Symbol you want to use and what colour that symbol is.
I'd avoid a Black or Dark colour for it otherwise it might get lost in the darker Purple shade (or the Black, if you're putting it on that Shoulder).

Also consider Chapter Specialists.
You want to make sure Sargents and Veterans have something to make them stand out, either the differing Helmet colours most Chapters use now or something more esoteric, like Pre-Primaris White Scars having Rank markings on the legs or Tacticals having Powerpack-mounted Banners on the Squad Leaders.

Additionally, stuff like Librarians, Chaplains, Techmarines and Apothecaries all usually have different colour schemes from the rest of the army, tho not always. It's a good idea to look up various ways these specialists are marked out chromatically and see if any fit your vision for the Chapter.
