Are kill team boxes tied in to the main line lore at all?

Like can we expect hive storm to tie into something currently going on in the lore or be the introduction to a new mainline story involving the tau?

well kill team sort of his it's own lore and stories - sort of. But I don't think it ties into main story lines. Not that I am aware of.

Hivestorm takes place in the Chalnath Expanse, so it interacts with anything else that takes place there too.

 

There is Chalnath based lore in Greater Good (8th campaign supplement), 8th and 9th Tau Dexes (probably 10th Tau dex as well) and the 9th ed Deathwatch supplement. This is the second KT box to come from the Chalnath expanse, so there's another source.

 

As for BL lore, I don't follow that very closely, so I don't know... but the Wiki doesn't list any BL novels as references.
