Maybe it is about expediency rather than capability? Been a while since I've read the rest of the HH series, so apologies if my details are wrong. Weren't Titans landed via coffin ships to Calth without space ports?

In any war zone being able to land men a d equipment unmolested is key to their survival. The space ports allow the traitors to do just this, yes they are a very strategic location.

However the first traitor forces all landed via troppo carrier etc without the aid of a star port, they were just very vulnerable to counter air attacks and battlement guns.

If Lions gate was still loyalist and Mortis had yet to land, this makes it more difficult but not impossible. Traitor ships can suppress wall guns and any large loyalist force build up, while Mortis and supporting forces land further out. Having longer to cross to the Walls will obviously put them at more of a risk from counter attack and the attentions of the Ordo Sinister and Legio Invigilata.

Ports, air fields etc make all this far far easier so if you can control and use one you will. But landing of forces isn't solely dependent on having one.

However landing forces on the top of the Himalayas is probably a lot quicker and more effective with a prepared landing site. I can easily believe that the surrounding terrain made a 'land further out and walk' strategy untenable.

No doubt Lions Gate space port made it so much easier but looking at their avenue of attack, Mortis still had to cross some distance to attack Mercury Wall.

Although they used some warp trickery to get there, that raises questions too.

To the North/North East you have the Katabatic Plains, didn't Mortis attack from that direction too? The map isn't super detailed but looks OK to land out there.

Again my scenario isn't the most ideal but I think it's workable to a degree.

What I'd really like to discuss is if Corax and Perturabo got into a duel, igniting the Gate 42 argument, who wins?

I highly rate and respect Corax both as a commander and fighter but my money would give Perturabo the edge. Especially with his bodyguard.

Corax and Perturabo are both "dark horses" to some extent in that we don't see them fight their brothers face-to-face very much. We know Corax beat Lorgar and would have killed him on Istvaan if Kurze had not intervened. I am try to recall Perturabo in any fights but none spring to mind. 1-on-1, I would put my money on Corax. If he has the Iron Circle with him then I think Perty comes out on top.

In Angel Exterminatus Perturabo puts up a decent showing against Fulgrim in their 'dispute'? And doesn't Perturabo teach Daemon Angron a lesson? Both incidents aren't full 1v1 duels mind.

Perturabo would definitely have his Iron Circle with him, he'd lay a trap for Corax I'd say and fill it with guns.

If Corax can Wraithslip close, while his Moritats etc deal with Iron Circle and Tyrant terminators and IW command, potentially he gets the Drop and kills Perturabo quickly?
