Does anybody have any idea what the closest match in basing paints is to the discontinued Citadel texture paints - Armageddon Dunes, Astrogranite Debris & Stirland Battlemire?

Colour matching is easy. Armageddon dunes is Zandri Dust, Astrogranite Debris is Mechanicus Standard Grey, and I think Stirland is Rhinox Hide.

The problem isn’t the colour of the bases, it’s the underlying texture that I’ve not been able to match. Annoyingly, I’ve got 3 armies based using those textures and I can’t quite seem to match it. Anyone any ideas?

A quick search suggests that maybe Vallejo's Weathering FX "Thick Mud" range or AK Interactive's "Muddy Ground" might be worth looking at.

I suppose another option might be to make your own using grout or acrylic medium?

Vallejo's regular "Diorama FX" range (Dark Earth, Brown Earth, Desert Sand, and Grey Sand) isn't a good match - the grain is finer than that used in GW's product, and it's also quite "sticky" (I find watering it down a little helps, otherwise it ends up with meringue-link peaks).

For what it's worth, it looks like GW's products were withdrawn due to containing skin irritants.

I’ve tried the AK interactive stuff - it’s great, but the consistency is somehwere between Armageddon dunes and dust. I use the red version, whatever the colour name is, on my Imperial Fists, and I find myself bulking it up with a little sand.

I will keep an eye out for Vallejo Thick Mud - I’ve given the Diorama FX stuff a try in the past and encountered similar issues.

I loved and used Battlemire heavily. Trust people and their skin to ruin things for everyone else. :teehee:

I've been testing textured paints quite a bit recently, it's a shame that one of my favourites is gone, I wasn't even aware it was discontinued. I've found some nice textures, but nothing that matches. I did used to mix it and Stirland Mud in patches and then blend other textures into it so maybe it won't be so noticeable. Failing that, I'll bury my bases in pigments until I fill in all the cracks and they are uniform again.

Crackle Paste acrylic medium from Golden, Liquitex, or another larger artist's paint line. You can mix up the texture to exactly what you want; or, you can lay down the texture and paint on top of it. The thickness determines how much cracking actually occurs.

I’m not asking about crackle paint though mate, I’m asking about the specific texture that was available in Armageddon Dunes and Astrogranite Debris…

Not that your post is bad information, because it isn’t - it just doesn’t answer my question.

Not experienced with what Stirland Battlemire looked like, but I have two minis based using Vallejo Diorama FX Brown Mud. Haven't done anything but apply the paste on the bases, so no thinning them or adding extra paint/washes, just straight product. The camera focus isn't great for the bases specifically, but here are a few photos, hope they help:

I just received a pot of Vallejo Thick Mud.

Its really nice, but it’s nowhere the texture of Armageddon Dunes.

I’ve just applied some to a test model - once that’s all dry, I’ll get some photos.
