Traveled to Sepulpa OK, outside of Tulsa for the Kill-Team portion of the Route 66 GT. I brought the Angels of Death team for my first tournament of the edition, having finished up my additional White Scars just in time for the event. My Chapter Tactics were Sharpshooter and Mobile. I took the same loadout every game (int. sergeant, eliminator, gunner, grenadier, assault intercessor and intercessor warrior.

Round 1 vs Blooded on Gallowdark playing Secure. W: 15-9.

  • Opening match was a tough one. My opponent played pretty cagey early on and after losing a couple of marines to his melta-gunner I was nervous for the outcome. TP's 3 & 4 went solidly in my favor though as I was able to capitalize on multiple double-shoot opportunities and quickly whittled his team down to a couple of operatives by the end of TP4. I took Take Ground, as my tac-op, which I'd never played before and only scored 3 on it. Partially through misplay, and partially due to opponents intervention. We tied on the crit-op, I took a sizeable lead on Kill-Op, which was my primary op resulting in a final score that belied how close the game felt at virtually every point ahead of the final round.

Round 2 vs Angels of Death on Vulkus playing Sabatage. W: 21-4

  • Second match was my first mirror with AoD which had me a bit nervous, but poor positioning on my opponents part, and a few miscalculated plays resulted in the game being over by the top of TP3. I took Contain as my Tac-Op which I had never played before, but synergized much better with my general gameplan, though I still made kill-op my primary. I ended up tableing my opponent so the score was a runaway, but I would find out later that he was still pretty new to the game so experience won the game more than my play did. He had some of the best Iron-Hands marines I've ever seen and was a genuine pleasure to play against.

Round 3 vs Corsair Voidscarred on Gallowdark playing Transmission. W 13-12

  • Final match of the event was the closest match of the day by far, both in terms of score and minute to minute play. My opponent knew his team well and played increidbly cagey, utilizing the doors to effectively trap my marines in rooms after chipping them with damage, and setting up plays behind closed doors fully exploiting his activation advantage. I lost my sergeant early in TP1 which put me down in CP and bodies early, and my failure to remember several of my additional rules/abilities resulted in me leaving models alive that should have been killed or losing a couple of marines that otherwise would have lived. I won a clutch initiative on TP3 that let me kill 4 elves in two activations, flattening the game and carving out my path to victory. All in all it was a great game, that came down to the final activations and my choice of secondary (contain).

I ended up winning the tournament (and best painted!) and having a ton of fun. I doubled my played game in the new edition, got to hang out with people I'd seen or played at other tournaments and meet new people that were locals in the area.

My primary take-aways from the event were that Elites definitely feel like they're on top of the meta at the moment, and while AoD isn't the worst offender (looking at you warp-coven) the eliminator operative and stalker bolt-rifle could definitely both use a bit of a nerf.
