I’m not sure if this is the right place to put this (I’m still new to this website), so if it isn’t, feel free to let me know so I know where next time. If the thread can be moved, I would appreciate help in doing so. In any event…

I have only recently gotten serious about wanting to start a collection & play the tabletop Warhammer 40K. Of course, 40K is kind of a “rich man’s game” if you know what I mean, so building an army without breaking the bank is going to take some time. First thing I would like to start my collection would be a character to represent me (or rather, an idealized version of me) to use for TTRPGs & eventually be the warlord for my army. Of course, being someone who wants to customize the hell out of my character, I would resort to kitbashing a character to make them exactly how I want. So as a start, I thought maybe I could ask how customizable certain figures are & go on to asking if there are ways of getting parts the way I want them.

So I have 2 figures that I am considering for my character: the Primaris Space Marine Captain in Gravis armor & the Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf. I’d like them to have a Chainsword in their right hand & either a pistol or arm blaster in their left. I know the Gravis Captain meets both of these, but can the Wolf Lord’s arms even be swapped? Can his head be swapped? All-in-all, how customizable is the Wolf Lord? I’m not asking about options for him, I’ve seen that he really has none on the WH40K app, just if I can aesthetically change his appearance?

As always, thank you for your help & God bless!

Your friendly neighbourhood moderati here.

Moved this, not because it was in the wrong place as such (PCA was fine for this type of question) but because the post is most specifically about the Thunderwolf Lord, which is a Space Wolves only unit, I thought the Space Wolves folks would be most familiar with the kit and the best able to answer your questions.

If they aren't, or it gets to the point where you need wider input (say, on sources for 3rd party parts), either start a new thread in the PCA or message me and I'll be happy to move it back.

The Wolf Lord is a resin model, so it's going to be harder to kit-bash due to the material.

From this unassembled picture, it looks like the head, shield arm, and shield are all separate pieces, whilst the axe arm is part of the body casting.

Don't know if that helps any?

That actually does help, even if it is disappointing. Was hoping he’d be more malleable.

there is another unit that I’ve seen listed in the WH40K app, the Wolf Guard Battle Leader on Thunderwolf, but all my searches seem to turn up nothing as if the unit does not exist. Can anyone verify its existence & if it does, how customizable is it?

The Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf is here. It's another resin model.

From your description of the weapons you want the model to have, you might consider the Thunderwolf Cavalry.

These are plastic models, so they're much easier to convert.

There is not a specific model for the Battle Leader on Thunderwolf. The normal approach is simply to take one of the regular Thunderwolf models and load it up with extra bling to represent the Battle Leader.

One piece of advice I would give is to be cautious about which Space Wolf-specific units you model. The latest set of rumours suggest that Space Wolves will be getting a significant refresh in about 6-9 months time. There is a good chance that some of the current units and Characters may get withdrawn but we don't know too much which ones will be going.

With this in mind, my advice would be to focus on generic Space Marine units (ideally Primaris ones) to start with and then apply some wolfy customisation to them. This means that you won't end up with of your hard work getting retired to Legends when the new Codex comes out. Fortunately the current Space Wolf infantry box is literally dripping with extra bits that you can use to adorn your plain Primaris models and turn them into true Sons of Russ. Just to give you an idea, here is a squad of Bladeguard Veterans I wolfed up when the monopose models came out with the 9th edition box set. Nothing fancy but a bit more character than the plain ones.

Thank you all for the advice. I guess I’ll look into getting the Thunderwolf Cavalry & see about combining parts of one of them with the Gravis Captain & give him some cool stuff to make him mine. I’m not above using proxies either.

The marine on the far right looks like Heihachi Mishima & I approve!
