In a standard 3k all comers list, how many do you take?

In my read there are several "techs" needed in HH2:

Elite CC Squads (WS5, 2+ w/INV and AP2)

Vehicle Hate (Lascannons)

Dread Hate (Grav, Lascannons, etc.)

Line Units (what it says on the box)

I play Iron Hands, and I generally have one Elite Squad, 3-4 Vehicle Hate and 1-2 Dread specific (spill over from Vehicle) and 2-3 Line units.  I'm probably overdoing it with Vehicle hate, but my army is good at it, and it can shift to deal with Dreads and elites.  I'd love to have more Elite CC, but my army is bad at it.

So how many of each tech do you take?  Are there any techs I've missed?

Depends on your meta on some of those. Depends on your RoW on others.

In my Drop Pod Army for example I have exactly zero of what you call Elite CC squads. I am currently fielding Sevatar, some Contekar and characters, its an almost pure close range shooting army. While in my IW Iron Fire list I have a small 5 man Dominator squad led by Golg and my DA always has at least one and sometimes two depending on which RoW I am using.

The Vehicle hate part is very meta dependent. You field a 10 man lascannon heavy weapon squad(of whatever type) in some groups and you might not find another game in that group. Other groups might limit you to one or 5 man max.  I dont have a single one in any of my armies because of this and use Autocannons(IW and NL) and melta support teams(NL) or a couple dreads geared up for anti-tank.

Line I typically field at least two units. Most often they are generic Tac squads but sometimes its something more exotic.

I always include at least one decent combat unit but it depends on the force I’m playing if I’ll use more. For my Iron Warriors it’s a 5 man Dominator squad, usually with a chaplain whilst the rest of the force tends to be more ranged. If I play Blood Angels on the other hand I tend to have a minimum of two decent combat units and sometimes three. When I play Custodes it’s impossible not to take a lot of good combat units as even the basic units would be elites in a legion force. Only my Solar Auxilia and Mechanicum force don’t really have a decent combat unit and that’s because they’re quite small allied forces.

For anti-vehicle I always have at least one and usually two units that can do the job. Whether that’s a dread with lascannons or my Tyrant siege unit for the iron warriors it tends to vary but I don’t run any heavy support squads with lascannons in any force.

I tend to use dreads to deal with other dreads but I rarely include more than 2 dreads in a list and always abide by the general consensus of one dread per 1k points. Obviously any anti tank units I also have can be used to deal with dreads.

I always run at least three line units, not including any command squads with banners.

I think that separating Anti-tank and Anti-Dread makes little sense since the two are almost always identical. I would add anti-elite, tough that can often also be taken care off by anti-tank. An important role that's missing there is anti-HSS duty (Snipers, artillery).

It's also important to note that not all Line units are created equal. (5 recons fulfill a vastly different role than a tooled up Despoilersquad)

I think that every lists should try to include an elite Melee unit with line, because heart of battle and shifting priorities are a nightmare to play without

What do you mean by HSS?  And what would you play to deal with Snipers and Artillery?  I agree with your last point completely, I normally run my Morlocks with a banner so I have an elite combat unit with Line.

I go for Highlander army compositions (max 1 of each unit I take), with the exceptions being Dedicated Transports and Compulsory Troops. Maybe double up on 1 unit, but I like my armies to look varied. I try to follow the advice I give new players looking to build an army: double up on roles, not units.

3 Troop (Line) units is my usual, and then make sure I have a balance of anti-tank and anti-infantry. I also try to take at least 1 legion specific unit if I can afford it or built it.

Unless I'm doing a narrative event/campaign, I make adjustments to my list as the games go on. If I'm getting crushed constantly, I start looking at including units that are normally seen as "too good" (scorpius, contemptor dreadnoughts, etc). Once the games start becoming close, then I only change the army to keep the games varied.
