I think I’d just go with Crabby’s interpretation and say that they mixed the key words up. I also do like the change that I had come up with because it would mean that the Cyclops Stalker could give them orders, but I can see how that may break the whole idea of the Support Formation. 
 

Actually, that does bring a question to mind… I don’t have the book in front of me, but since it only lists March and Charge, those are the only two commands you can give the Automata in the Formation, correct? I’m just trying to wrap my head around the idea of bringing the Thanatar and only having those two commands to choose from. I suppose you would be forced to take the worse version of it, but… meh.

Is it possible they intended to exclude the HQ Detachment from the requirement and simply forgot?

As in, your HQ can just be an Archmagos on or off their Abyent as usual for a Mechanicum Taghmata list but everything else needs to have Cortex?

I think that means you can put Tech Priest Auxilla in that one now since they're a Support Detachment with Cortex Controllers, right?

Yes, that would be correct. They don’t specify which Support detachments you have to take, only that you take two Support detachments as part of your Compulsory Detachments.
