Evening all, this hopefully marks the start of my 40k painting blog. This is mainly focussed around a small, but growing Deathwatch and inquisition force based around having fun with kitbashes, sculting and 3d printing to make something interesting and fun to look at. I'm not the biggest player... my last match was probaby some time back in 7th edition. The thought of having to get something up to gaming standards that won't be trounced by local WAAC players is not something that grabs. Hopefully you have some fun, and feel free to offer critique or suggestions as we go!

I need to redo some shoulder pads as I've decided freehand really wasn't the way to go, so I'll try and do some group shots once those are done, but for now lets start with a recently completed project, and a current WIP to get things rolling.

We have Judicar Zakaror, who spent years as part of the Dark Angels chapter, but as part of his recent progression to Chaplain, has been seconded to the Deathwatch to serve as a Judicar. Where better to prove your worth and learn those valuable lessons in serving the Emperor? Here you can see him with his C.A.T.

The base model for our Judicar here was the Lord-Terminos model from the recent Age of Sigmar box, with some marine bits and pieces added into the mix. Eventually we will also have Wolf-Brother Faffnar the Bold joining the watchhouse to guard the domains of mankind. The additions to the dreadnought frame are from GreyTide Studio's Primal Hounds set, along with a Deathwatch shoulder guard. He is being done as part of an Ancients painting challenge on another forum.

Thanks! It was only after I finished him that I saw other people doing the same thing (to different extents) on Reddit. Some of the new Stormcast will make great Deathwatch, and I'm eyeing up one for my Word Bearers that I will start posting about shortly!

Not completely finished, but three terminators are just about ready to join the Watch. The shoulderpads need fixing and some transfers adding as I got bored of hand painting all of the chapter iconography. I did do a bit of practice on some spare pads and I *think* I now have the curved surfaces all worked out.

The powerfists are all 3d printed as it was easier than trying to carve off the original arms to fit onto the 3d printed deathwatch pads

I'm nearly done with the current batch of Word Bearers, so I'm going to take a step back from those for a bit and loop back to my Deathwatch and inquisition related gubbins. Some of the models may not be ever so loyalist... but we shall see. Hopefully there will be more WIP shots in here as I work out what is going on with figures, rather than the other one which is just... here's more red marines :D

I can't believe I forgot to post the finished version of the dreadnought... so here you go. Wolf-Brother Faffnar in all his stompy glory.

I've been meaning to have a go at the grimdark painting style for a while, so at lunchtime today I painted up one of my renegade guard (destined for the Word Bearers) as a test model. From the videos I watched last night it seems to be block colour your model, then slather it with thinned oil paint, or AK weathering liquids; leave it to dry for a bit and then start removing it with thinners.

This cultist was just one coat of the brown to see how it went and get to grips with the concept. I want to take a bit more time on models in this thread, so I'll hopefully start learning more about this style over the coming weeks, or until adhd brain gets bored and decides another technique is more fun :D

the basic, block colour version. Very rough, but I wanted to see how forgiving the oil layer was

The answer? Pretty damn forgiving! Obviously this needs more detailing and rust effects on his chainmail and armour to make him seem more... renegade... but even so, I'm absolutely loving him after the cleanup. Removing the oil wash to bring him from allover dark brown to this was about a minute's work and looks way nicer than any GW washes

Looking good! What did you use for the clean-up?

Clean-up was done with a bit of white spirit and cotton buds, but it stinks so I'm awaiting some odourless mineral spirit to arrive before trying again. I want to get some sandy coloured oil paint to try adding better dust effect to anything using the desert bases too

That's a nicely "wolfyised" dreadnought. Also nice to see the Wolves not on an ice planet

Thanks! I'm trying to put everything onto desert bases so it makes sense if they ever team up/fight. It all started back when I printed a tallarn army, which I should go back to and update for the new book come to think of it!

Yes, I’ve found oil washes flow more realistically, look better, and are easier to manipulate than acrylic washes. I often use both oil and acrylic washes on a given model, as each does different things. I have found that here in the US the “Gamsol” brand of mineral/white spirits is fairly odorless. I’m also transitioning my Traitor Guard army to desert bases—it’s really fun to add weathering powder to boots and legs.
