Evening all, this hopefully marks the start of my 40k painting blog. This is mainly focussed around a small, but growing Deathwatch and inquisition force based around having fun with kitbashes, sculting and 3d printing to make something interesting and fun to look at. I'm not the biggest player... my last match was probaby some time back in 7th edition. The thought of having to get something up to gaming standards that won't be trounced by local WAAC players is not something that grabs. Hopefully you have some fun, and feel free to offer critique or suggestions as we go!

I need to redo some shoulder pads as I've decided freehand really wasn't the way to go, so I'll try and do some group shots once those are done, but for now lets start with a recently completed project, and a current WIP to get things rolling.

We have Judicar Zakaror, who spent years as part of the Dark Angels chapter, but as part of his recent progression to Chaplain, has been seconded to the Deathwatch to serve as a Judicar. Where better to prove your worth and learn those valuable lessons in serving the Emperor? Here you can see him with his C.A.T.

The base model for our Judicar here was the Lord-Terminos model from the recent Age of Sigmar box, with some marine bits and pieces added into the mix. Eventually we will also have Wolf-Brother Faffnar the Bold joining the watchhouse to guard the domains of mankind. The additions to the dreadnought frame are from GreyTide Studio's Primal Hounds set, along with a Deathwatch shoulder guard. He is being done as part of an Ancients painting challenge on another forum.

Thanks! It was only after I finished him that I saw other people doing the same thing (to different extents) on Reddit. Some of the new Stormcast will make great Deathwatch, and I'm eyeing up one for my Word Bearers that I will start posting about shortly!

Not completely finished, but three terminators are just about ready to join the Watch. The shoulderpads need fixing and some transfers adding as I got bored of hand painting all of the chapter iconography. I did do a bit of practice on some spare pads and I *think* I now have the curved surfaces all worked out.

The powerfists are all 3d printed as it was easier than trying to carve off the original arms to fit onto the 3d printed deathwatch pads

I'm nearly done with the current batch of Word Bearers, so I'm going to take a step back from those for a bit and loop back to my Deathwatch and inquisition related gubbins. Some of the models may not be ever so loyalist... but we shall see. Hopefully there will be more WIP shots in here as I work out what is going on with figures, rather than the other one which is just... here's more red marines :D

I can't believe I forgot to post the finished version of the dreadnought... so here you go. Wolf-Brother Faffnar in all his stompy glory.

I've been meaning to have a go at the grimdark painting style for a while, so at lunchtime today I painted up one of my renegade guard (destined for the Word Bearers) as a test model. From the videos I watched last night it seems to be block colour your model, then slather it with thinned oil paint, or AK weathering liquids; leave it to dry for a bit and then start removing it with thinners.

This cultist was just one coat of the brown to see how it went and get to grips with the concept. I want to take a bit more time on models in this thread, so I'll hopefully start learning more about this style over the coming weeks, or until adhd brain gets bored and decides another technique is more fun :D

the basic, block colour version. Very rough, but I wanted to see how forgiving the oil layer was

The answer? Pretty damn forgiving! Obviously this needs more detailing and rust effects on his chainmail and armour to make him seem more... renegade... but even so, I'm absolutely loving him after the cleanup. Removing the oil wash to bring him from allover dark brown to this was about a minute's work and looks way nicer than any GW washes

Looking good! What did you use for the clean-up?

Clean-up was done with a bit of white spirit and cotton buds, but it stinks so I'm awaiting some odourless mineral spirit to arrive before trying again. I want to get some sandy coloured oil paint to try adding better dust effect to anything using the desert bases too

That's a nicely "wolfyised" dreadnought. Also nice to see the Wolves not on an ice planet

Thanks! I'm trying to put everything onto desert bases so it makes sense if they ever team up/fight. It all started back when I printed a tallarn army, which I should go back to and update for the new book come to think of it!

Yes, I’ve found oil washes flow more realistically, look better, and are easier to manipulate than acrylic washes. I often use both oil and acrylic washes on a given model, as each does different things. I have found that here in the US the “Gamsol” brand of mineral/white spirits is fairly odorless. I’m also transitioning my Traitor Guard army to desert bases—it’s really fun to add weathering powder to boots and legs.

Ah, the inquisition got delayed in the warp, but some Deathwatch are starting to slip through and are nearing completion! There are about 6 more, but the photos really didn't come out well, so I need to redo those tomorrow if I get the chance! I tend not to play, so don't expect complete units just yet... or even game legal ones :D

These two are ones that came out ok and I'm not absolutely aghast at what they look like on screen.

First up is a new version of Drenn Redblade from the original Kill Team Cassius. In my headcannon he stayed with the Deathwatch and went through the Primaris-ing process successfully. Learning a few lessons along the way, in that a dagger is not the greatest weapon... he's upgraded to a shield to keep him alive just that little bit longer. There's a bit more shading, including the blade; then basing, transfer and weathering left to be done.

Drenn Redblade, Space Wolf Deathwatch

Next we have a mysterious Eliminator, equipped for desert warfare. Not sure what Chapter he's from, but it's something celtic based with that kneepad. I still need to smooth out the cloak a little and base/weather him. Suggestions welcome so I can add him to the growing chart of Chapters... which reminds me I need to create a gallery somewhere and upload updated photos for all my finished Deathwatch, including their chapters and bios.

As I mentioned, there are a bunch of others that are also in the works, but the photos were Not Good (TM).

What I do have though is the base progress on two more. We have a heavy intercessor to join one of the Indomitor squads, and an Apothecary Biologis. I don't have plans for either chapter yet, and still need to decide if I'm doing the apothecary in white or black. Feels weird having an apothecary in black armour...

The Intercessor has been heavily kitbashed, and clearly favours some brutal assault as he's got Goliath grenades on his belt! The Apothecary has had some minor adjustments and a new right arm so he doesn't look like every other Biologis out there :D

Thanks! I did a bit more tweaking on the eliminator and 4 others. They are now all based, waiting for transfers and then weathering. (quick snap, so the colours look a bit wonky)

The terminator sergeant and the middle figure are both Space Wolves from the Blackmanes

The Eliminator doesn't have a visible chapter, but will be something celtic-y. I think I'm going to need to make something up here and have one or two others from the same chapter around with more visible shoulder pads.

The other Infernus has an orange shoulder. I think he's going to be Knights of Gryphonne, assuming I can find my transfers with a black gryphon...

And the champion has a light blue shoulder pad, so he's probably going to be from the Accipiters, if I can actually paint their icon properly.. otherwise his pad is getting a repaint to something easier.

There are two more that have reached the point that I need to decide on chapters for them. Suggestions are welcome! I'd love to start adding in other people's custom chapters if you'll let me :D

And a few more that are now prepped for black armour and then chapter selection!

The other thing I need to work out is how to actually document each of the members of the Watch house once they are finished, and to cross-reference with what units can be built. I'd love a 40k version of KTDash where each figure can be uploaded with a story or notes, but I can see that getting overwhelming and most people wouldn't care :D

If you are looking for custom chapter's, I would be honoured if one of your deathwatch sported the symbol from my late friend's marines - its the red pupiled eye with red tear on the gold roman "I".  Seer grey or similar works for the pad colour - I used Tamiya's light grey, but there's no need for you to.

Fantastic work, BTW.

Excellent, thank you all! I look forward to bringing some of them into the Watch House!

I've not done any painting over the last few days, but I have built a 5 man Infiltrator squad, some blade guard and three Eradicators to add a bit of punch. those, and some other older builds, are being undercoated, so I'll post pictures when they reach the base shading layer as seen above.

What I *have* been doing though, is starting to work out how I actually  bring some of the background to my Watch House to life a bit, and give everyone a name (wether this will end up with name plates on the bases or not is still open to debate... I've started a wiki on my hosting where I'm going through everyone finished so far and writing up some background on them. This means that any future finished models will get their full profile posted here, with photos, before it gets moved over onto the wiki :D

Starting at the Adeptus Astartes page gives you the best overview of who is in there so far
https://pssm.uk/dw/index.php/Category:Adeptus_Astartes

Feel free to go have a read and point out any issues with it all! Some areas are using placeholder info pulled from warhammer40k.fandom.com, but this will be rewritten to be more narrative. At some point I want to go through and put it all in the style of an Inquisitor documenting the forces he is fighting alongside as I have some WIP retinue bits and pieces dotted around as well. If you have background on your chapters, please let me know so I can weave it in, and give credit!

Oh that definitely sounds like an amazing tribute that needs to be continued!  I had a look at the thread and, unfortunately, I can't seem to see any of the images. I'm just seeing "These images are not viewable in your region" through the entire thread :(

Ah, you're a Brit - they are hosted by Imgur, unfortunately, which has decided to block your fair isles due to internet legislation there.  When I have a moment, I will migrate the photos elsewhere and repost them, then let you know when I have.
