What happened with the warhammer TV/Film on Amazon ?

Last time I heard about it, was in the investor report saying that if they didn't reach an agreement on a script by November of this year. The agreement would be null or reading between the line ( they would need to completely redo the contract). So It's november... We haven't heard anything about Amazon or GW, is it cancelled or what ? I would assume so as per the document ?

 

What happens next do they do another contract, does GW go to netflix or something ? What's happening ? It's really frustrating because I was really hyped about this and everyone is radio silent on all front except for secret level.

 

The only people talking about it are less than reputable source on youtube... It seemed to be a complete slam dunk for amazon especially with how much stuff there is in this IP and the multitude of fans etc. What the hell is happening at amazon/GW ???

We won't know until next month, as the negotiating timetable was Dec 2023 to Dec 2024. Until GW and/or Amazon actually says something, we won't have any information- these types of negotiations are done with very few people who won't leak any info (lawyers and corp execs) due to serious penalties for violating NDAs.

Boy, I would love to opine substantively on this topic, but doing so without infracting the recent forum proscription on political discussions would be impossible.

 

Short answer: the success of Space Marine 2 is actually an indicator of how much an Amazon Warhammer show would suck. Most of the things people love about that game would have gotten yeeted if Amazon were overseeing development, and all of the divisive modern-day concerns that MUST be a part of any Amazon Studios show would render the property unrecognizable and unwatchable.

 

I am unhappy about the indications that there probably won't be a Warhammer live-action series any time soon. I am profoundly grateful that there probably won't be an AMAZON Warhammer live-action series.

What do you mean? The Boys is probably Amazon's most successful show right now and it is as extreme in most ways as it gets. Why would Amazon's involvement make a TV show based on 40k any different than a game based on 40k?

I don't really care that much about a 40k series though. For me 40k is about the models.

I mean, the short answer is "we don't know." We probably won't know anything until it's actually announced, which could be next month or they could agree the outline of production, but not really have any actual news for 6-12months as they sort casting, scripts, production design etc. For a potentially effects heavy sci-fi show could easily be another 2 years of work - and if they go animated, who knows? Arcane has taken about 7 years in development for what, 9 episodes lasting about 8 hours (absolutely worth it though!)

 

However, the fact that SM2 is featured in Secret Level probably isn't a bad sign, though depending on how these deals were negotiated who knows - Secret Level is being produced by Amazon MGM so we'll see. If it is true to the game though, that does somewhat blow a hole through the argument that Lord Nord seems to be making. Which, go on, I'll bite....

 

Yes, Rings of Power is a really, really bad show. But it's hardly the only thing that Amazon have produced and funded - The Man in the High Castle was fantastic, Fallout was well received, they saved The Expanse and if you want horror/thriller I would recommend The Devil's Hour. Good Omens was also a very well received adaptation and I personally have enjoyed The Grand Tour, which if anything just turbocharged the good ol' days of Top Gear. And then there's The Boys, which as others have pointed out is hardly bland family fare.

 

Basically, I'm much more interested in who the writers/creative team are than the studio backing it. All of them (Sky, HBO, Netflix, Disney, Amazon) have their hits and their misses.

Yeah, that looks solid. Going to be interesting to see how this lands. 

 

The one point I would make is that for trying to tell a wider story or a solid narrative, Space Marines are pretty bad options unless you go with a Titus or a Loken or similar, who essentially dials down the Astartes bit for a more "human" protagonist. Because Marines basically just train, pray and kill... they don't exactly have much in the way of internal characterisation. 

 

Hence why a TV series should really be about an Inquisitor or Rogue Trader, cause then you can do all that human stuff, and save on the CGI a bit.

Well rumours still persist they're looking at Eisenhorn, but we won't know for a while yet probably. I certainly wouldn't expect anything to materialise till 2027 at earliest. As always, happy to be proven wrong.

Been saying a while now, Eisenhorn's Xeno, the first book is such a natural first point for a warhammer series. You learn a lot about the setting, how the imperium works. The inquisitor comes across as a super investigator of a kind which would be easy for audiences to recognise and understand.

Agreed on Eisenhorn, but will GW do a series that is not set in the current timeline? There are a lot of cool stories like Armageddon, Badab, Eisenhorn, etc but all are set in the time period that GW no longer makes media for.

And there are many very popular TV series or films about where all the characters are in the same unit, they don't often have dialogue with the enemy because thats unrealistic, and they don't have onscreen girlfriends because they're at war. 

 

Space marines are the big draw for GW. If the two companies try to say they can't do marines, it's because they're making up problems for themselves.

 

 

If culture and mass media is good for anything, it should expand out minds enough that we don't think things like the most popular characters in this game aren't good for stories.

 

I'm never paying any money for an Amazon TV show, or watching one for free really.  They hate you.

It depends how serious as well GW are about protecting the IP. Im guessing they'll be happy to let amazon make it the 40k version Concord if they get paid.

Calling it now, the show is actually a serialized retelling of Jingle All The Way, with Arnie playing a Space Marine desperate to buy his favourite chapter serf a Turbomarine toy for Sanguinalia, and goes on a galaxy-spanning adventure to get it all whilst being hounded by a crackpot Administratum clerk.

Agreed. While dates are mentioned in Eisenhorn, they are for context. You could pretty easily transplant most of it to the end of M41 without changing anything. You could even move it to the era Indomitus in theory. You might have to change a few details since there is no mention of the Great Rift, Fall of Cadia or return of Guilliman but I don't think that is too hard. The only tricky bit is in Penitent when they treat the idea of the return of a Primarch with astonishment. But even that scene could be changed without affecting the overall story.

They've already tried with Eisenhorn, but it went nowhere.
