Kaede45
So I have the Thunderwolf Cavalry & a Captain in Gravis Armor as my first minis & I would like to mount the captain onto one of the Thunderwolves & make him my warlord (or more accurately, my avatar). I mainly would like to know if anyone has ever tried this before & if so, how best to go about it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time & God bless! Knightsword
I don't have experience with the actual Thunderwolf models, but I've been doing proxies for Thunderwolf Cavalry by sticking Assault Intercessors on to the AoS Dracoths (which annoyingly have the Stormcast legs molded on to the mounts body) so I would say it's definitely doable, it's just a case of how much chopping and sculpting you're willing to do. Is it the newest Gravis Captain with the split leg pose that you have, the one with the master crafted heavy bolt rifle, or the Dark Imperium one that you've got? sbarnby71
I think if you did this with GW ThunderWolves, it would look way too small (someone would report you to the RSPCA ). This is a Reiver on GW Thunderwolf I did, it just about works but you don't feel wolf is an unstopable force that it should be. I'd have a look at some 3d printed Dire Wolves or Wags and get someone to upscale them a bit. As for conversion, you'll need to split the legs at the groin, re-position the backs of the knees to get the crouch of the rider. It took a lot of hacking and filling, but I enjoyed it. That’s not a bad idea. I was thinking that it would be a good idea to buy some new legs for the captain (especially considering that his right foot has a stone). Do you happen to have any recommended links? Thanks again & God bless! That is a good point, I hadn't even thought about the Gravis models size compared to the Thunderwolves. 15 minutes ago, Kaede45 said: That’s not a bad idea. It shouldn't be too hard to remove that rock, however if you're wanting better legs that are mirrored then I'd look at getting a pair of legs from the Inceptors kit. You'd have to remove the foot plates from the feet but they are at better angles for using on a mount. Thanks again & God bless! Hope the info helped. I did buy 1 of these a few weeks back https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1471782969/orrugs-wolves-nomad-orrugs-32mm-scale I went for option C as I wanted a prowling wolf. Now it's not much bigger than the GW scale, but it is chunkier. Maybe ping the seller and see if they could upscale it to 34mm or maybe you can discuss an actual size in cms? sbarnby71
Another tip is don't be afraid to hide gaps with pelts and pouches and stuff. This is an first-born terminator riding a beast, you can see I cheated with a pelt and stuff. From the back he looks a bit comical, I mean that's some major splits for Terminator Armour! It did, but now I’m going down a rabbit hole thinking of what other beasts I could mount him on… I still want to find some good legs & I have no clue what the best measurements are… Still, thank you very much for the help & God bless! A Khorne Juggernaut, any of the dragons from AoS/Old World, literally ANY kids animal figure like a Cerberus (don't limit yourself to GW or printed minis). The options are endless! In all honesty, I’d probably create an entire Space Marine chapter (or mixed army) based around beast mastery where everyone is either a cavalier or has an animal companion of some kind. edit: forgot to say that I doubt the rules would even allow that… Edited Friday at 04:01 PM by Kaede45 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384588-gravis-captain-on-thunderwolf-help/#findComment-6075875 Share on other sites
Knightsword
I can advocate for the AoS dragons 33 minutes ago, Kaede45 said: In all honesty, I’d probably create an entire Space Marine chapter (or mixed army) based around beast mastery where everyone is either a cavalier or has an animal companion of some kind. edit: forgot to say that I doubt the rules would even allow that… I've seen someone on Youtube proxy Thunderwolf Cavalry with a marine and a Seraphon velociraptor (I forget the actual name) on the 60mm base along with some other dinosaur themed stuff like a proxied Logan Grimnar on Stormrider but instead is mounted on a Seraphon Carnosaur. I was actually contemplating something similar but using a Fyreslayer Magmadroth instead. If you really wanted to represent animal companions on the board then you could do something like have a unit of Assualt Intercessors move around with a same sized unit of Fenrisian Wolves or have a character move around with a cyberwolf (Didn't Ragnar used to have 2 wolves way back when?). You could then proxy a different but same sized animal model for the animal companions to suit your Chapter's theme.
