Thanks all! Progress is slowly being made on the characters, but I'm not quite yet finished with three of them yet. Task for 2025 is to finally crack the miniature photography... with the coloured background it all comes out very yellow and dark; with a white background it comes out ... weird. I like the images in the background so I guess I need to just look at lighting that better (and maybe finding one that's not quite so yellow!)

In the mean time, I did manage to finish a few more elements to the force. A small Plasma support squad

and the initial 5 Gal Vorbak from ebay as GW were out of stock. The next 5 are a combination of 3d printed and the two plastic Greater Possessed

I also managed to knock out a jump chaplain to go with the assault squad when I get around to building them. One more character needs finishing to pay the character tax, then we should be all good for a small force to expand from! I might go back and add some extra shading to the metallics as it doesn't look like there is any in the photos (there really is! :/ )

Looks like I have a small starter force already, which is a surprise! I guess for 1000pt games the tacticals would be shrunk a bit and the terminators dropped. It won't be able to be properly Word Bearers until I finish that second HQ choice. I think priority here is a second Chaplain for hanging around with one of the tactical squads, which would bring it nearly up to the 1500pt mark with enough points left to add chainswords to one of the tactical squads.

A little trick I've been shown (for coloured backgrounds, I use one of GW's cardboard mats), is to have a small square of white paper in one of the corners of the photo (mine is blutac'd to the top of my board). This will help with balancing, as there's a point of white reference in the pic, and then you do any corrections, then crop it out.

You can also get white balance cards which are neutral grey, or colour reference boards (e.g. Greytag-Macbeth) which have a variety of colours as well as white- and black points.

If your device has a manual white balance option, it's generally easier to use that than it is to correct it in software later.

Good call on the white card/spot test card, thanks!

Yesterday we made the pilgrimage to Warhammer World to visit the museum and go resin shopping. The museum is well worth a visit, even if the Heresy section does seem to be missing nearly all the resin units and characters. The store was equally empty in the Heresy section. The resin part of the store has shrunk to a tiny corner as things like Old World and Necromunda expand their footprint and, much like the website.. was mostly empty, so I came away with nothing off my shopping list. Not even the Ww exclusive models as they were all oos too :/

Ah well. Money saved and all that. Still, I did dig out my Legions Imperialis box and started to paint that up instead when I got home.

Shame you weren't able to get any of the exclusive models  (I'll admit, I haven't a clue what they are) I wonder how much the stock shortages are costing GW in lost sale.

The Legions Imperialis models look great, especially given they're so tiny. The bases came out nicely, too.

I had sort of assumed that the website was oos because they were holding stock for the hq shop... But no. Which makes me wonder how much of the range is going plastic and is stuck in the factory work. I think yesterday they lost out on about £400 so the bank are happy :D

I was sorting of dreading the LI figures as my eyes aren't so great at detail any more. Turns out contrast paints are king for these!

Things are slowly starting to fall into place again with time, so expect a few things to get finished over the weekend!

First things first, there has been a bit of progress on the Legions Imperialis squads. We now have three finished sets for the Word Bearers. Plasma, Missile launchers and jumpy-bois. Getting these in focus in one go is... tricksy, so I'll try again over the weekend, I just wanted to get them out and about. Contrast is definitely king on the main body colour. We shall see what Dark Mechanicus are like when I Get around to their box. Some of the bits to stick on are insanely small and fiddly!

I also signed up for the Kill Team challenge earlier, so I need to work out some options for building a Nemesis Claw team... without being able to buy the Nemesis Claw box as, you guessed it... it's out of stock! *Face/palm*. Not having much luck here with things I want to pay GW for!

The intention is to create a small Word Bearer team that entered the warp after Istvaan V, hunting for some fleeing Raven Guard, and somehow pop out 10,000 years later wondering what the heck is going on and why there is all this rare power armour all over the place. This means that the figures can do duty in 30k, 40k or Kill Team; depending on the flavour of the day. Where there are things like chain glaives or fighting claws that are not particularly Word Bearer-ish... getting lost in the warp for 10,000 years (or 2 months as far as they are concerned) has had some... effects on them.

Life... life happened. How dare life! :D

Anyway... we return to The Word with some progress and some new photos of the more recent squads as while I havn't posted in a while, work has continued to progress with  everything regardless! Some of these have been through here before, but the new lightbox has improved things a bit (still some tweaking with colours, but getting better!)

First up is the full Space Marine infantry set from the LI starter box. They are simple, but you get the gist of who they are. At some point I may come back to the banners... maybe. I've got a bunch of tanks in progress, but the undercoat went really powdery on some, so I'm really not happy with their progress. As such they are just sat there in a pile of shame.

With two full squads of standard infantry, I needed some hitting power, so the army now has a small squad of missile launchers to give it a bit of a punch. A larger lascannon squad is in the painting queue, so should make an appearance at some point. One of these will go into the Kill Team squad that I pledged to try and do as well. Photo of that group so far in the next post!

Way back on page 1 you got to see a couple of characters that were work in progress. They are now finished, ready to lead the growing force into battle

Our brave Praetor waves his spiky sword around and wonders... why do I have giant horns that will get caught in a fight?!
PXL_20250423_162130787.thumb.jpg.8bf384856b882c1a2188f555e2b6b26c.jpg

The second Chaplain (or diabolist... whichever) is shouting at his pointy-hitty stick
PXL_20250423_162151389.thumb.jpg.dde2cac6b696221ef302d6ff4157b3b9.jpg

And the terminator diabolist is wondering who set fire to his library book? That's going to cost him an arm and a leg in fines! PXL_20250423_162111774.thumb.jpg.9be9b84dd74403cf852a02e1aed153e3.jpg

With two sets of standard marines, I figure I needed to include some close quarters troops. After making this lot, I ran out of chainswords... I now have a bunch more after a trip to Warhammer World last weekend... so more should be coming shortly.

-----------------------------

I also pledged an oath to the dark gods to try and complete a Kill Team by the end of May, and so far have spectacularly failed to post anything about them... so here we go!

In the aftermath of Istvaan V, Lorgar sent multiple kill teams off after escaping Loyalist forces to ensure that they would not bring news of the massacre to the wider galaxy just yet. One team, Kaa'Daa Seekers, chased a group of Raven Guard  off planet and chased them across the system. As the team boarded the enemy ship, the captain tried to escape by transitioning into the warp. Rather than losing the Kaa'Daa Seekers, the captain accidentally managed to breach the gellar field and causing the ship to be boarded not only by the Word Bearers, but by daemonic entities as well.

Over the course of two days, the Word Bearers slowly worked their way through the ship facing harsh retribution from the loyalists, but eventually purging the ship of all Raven Guard and making it to the bridge. While the kill team had been busy with their former brothers-in-arms, the captain had fallen to the dark powers and slowly merged with the ship to become it's permanent resident; whether he likes it or not.

Upon return to realspace, the kill team found that they were not where they expected to be. What had appeared to be a few days for them had been 10,000 years... The uprising had failed, but Lorgar still survived... somewhere in the galaxy.

The Kaa'Daa now use the ship, and it's captain, as their transport as they try to return to their brothers and understand what is happening

image.thumb.jpeg.e377628b954d89ef933ae3fc3edf2d16.jpeg

So far the Kill team consists of 5 members, but at the very least I still need to create a Visionary to lead the team in the next couple of weeks. Adding in a Fearmonger would be nice.. but not necessary. I'll be back to update the profiles a bit more over the coming weeks

In our team so far we have:

Kalthac Skiryn (Screacher) -Kalthac loves to get up close and personal in combat with his lightning claws. He's considered a bit of a loner and takes the Word even more seriously than the rest of the team (which is saying something).

Mordevile Dymora (Ventrilokar) - Mordevile was once his company standard bearer, and continues to carry the company honour with him. Over time the banner has begun to feed on warp energy and now provides him with some level of psychic control over the enemy...

Sekrulak Turiz (Heavy) - Sekrulak is the team heavy weapons specialist, loving to see things go BOOM

Halarouth Gayagwer (Gunner) - (Plasma gun)

Rhydax Fermine (Warrior) - (Chainsword/bolt pistol)

Thanks! The banner is one of the Forgrworld Word Bearer transfers cut to shape, so I can't really take much credit for that one...

Last weekend I managed to get to Warhammer World on my way to a festival. I have never seen so many empty shelves! Not just the resin stuff was in short supply, but the plastics were also very light on the group for anything! on the plus side, they did finally have the Warhammer World Warsmith in stock, along with the traitor champion consul... so that was two additions to the Word Bearer ranks.

The Warsmith needs some green stuff work doing on him as there are hazard stripes sculpted onto the leg and shoulder pad; plus the loin cloth has an Iron Warrior symbol on the belt buckle. The pad I can fix with a spare plastic one, but the other bits will need some covering up or replacing with alternatives. Time to look at getting the printer going again and work out where the green stuff has gone!

Work in progress group will add another 19 members to the cult. 5 heavy bolters, 5 more plasma guns and 9 more tacticals. Most of these are the old MK III models, so feel a bit short next to the newer models and chaos marine torsos.

There's still transfer, a bit more chipping and final weathering powders over the top left.
