Which unit should I have with Ragnar?

Hello!

In a few matches I have used Ragnar Blackmane together with 6 Bladeguard Veterans in an Impulsor. However, I have not been completely satisfied. 

Now thinking about whether I should instead run with 5 Assault Intercessors and a Lieutenant. I think the Lieutenant's ability "Target Priority" seems very interesting. The unit can both shoot and charge in the turn in which they fall back. Very good for Ragnar.

 

What do you think will be best together with Ragnar? Do you have any advice?

Like Ragnar, the BGVs hit very hard meaning that having both in the same unit can be overkill. I like a Judiciar to lead by BGVs as Fights First is a really good rule.

 

As for Ragnar, Assault Intercessors work really well for him as the the rerolls to wound stacks well with his bucket-load of attacks and helps to make sure his damage sticks, even when punching up against tough targets. Yes a Lt works well stacked if you have the points. I like the MCPW, Shield and Volkite combo but other builds can work too.

Love running Ragnar with 10 Blood Claws out of a Land Raider They are an absolute blender and push Ragnar to absurd heights. Something like 11 S9 attacks with Frostfang on top of the beef the PCs bring and you can delete a lot of stuff off the table in a single turn. The LT is good if you think you'll have the chance to fall back and charge again--both the Blood Claws and Ragnar love doing that. Add in a Wolf Guard Pack Leader for another Thunder Hammer/Power Fist if you want to get really silly with it. You can even make it a WGPL in Terminator Armor and add an assault cannon or missile launcher for those brief bursts of shooting between charging and falling back.

@TheNicronomicon I love Ragnar + Claws + Lt too, I normally run them in a Land Raider to make sure they get where they are going.

 

My only hesitation at the moment is whether Blood Claws are still going to be a think when our new Codex (eventually) drops.

Fair point--no idea what they might look like if they survive the codex. For now I'm literally just using AI models and calling them Blood Claws--if that gets borked after the book drops then I've still got a unit of 10 AIs. Mine come boiling out of a Crusader with guns blazing and chainswords howling.

AIs are good in their own right. But I agree, Claws synergise well with Ragnar as they want to be charging every turn. Pick Warrior Born as your starting Saga vs horde opponents and Beastslayer vs tough foes and away you go!

The rumours are pretty clear that blood claws will be returning with a new kit however what their rules will look like is a completely different question
