Command squad

5 kasrkin

10 rough riders

since it seems a lot of people missed this news with the reveal show let’s have a thread dedicated to it.

i find it kind of confusing this is the route they went.

maybe there’s a ‘specialist’ theme they’re going for? If so I feel this is a real stretch

Honestly, I have all of the basic new guardsmen and vehicles for my collection but none of the Kasrkin or Rough Riders.

So I'm super interested in this kit. :ermm: So there's a target audience somewhere.

But how large is that audience?

This for sure leans towards veteran collectors rather than new players bulking out their armies to get started which is a weird lean for a set which traditionally is meant for new players to get started. Maybe they figured most guard players already have their armies and arent buying enough of the new stuff.

This was kind of my thought too.
Rough Riders might not be selling as good as they want so bundle them with something good (Kasrkin) and something necessary (HQ squad) to coax a purchase.

Honestly, it's just a decent follow up to the first box. No duplicates apart from the Command Squad, which is always decent for bits if nothing else, and then you get a Skirmisher infantry unit and a bunch of fast melee idiots. First CP was basic armour and infantry, this one is more specialist units.

I don't see the issue there.

At least two ;). If you jumped on  guard in 9th with the army set and/or the 9th ed christmas box this is a good bundle to fill out missing units.  I got both so this box is pretty much a sure pick up for me.

It is an odd choice for new players, I’ll give it that though.

Sure but that's not what Combat Patrols have been sold as; they were pitched as the easy way to get into your army.

The vanishingly small venn diagram of people who bought the old CP but didn't buy anything else in the intervening two years and who are still interested in guard makes this a weird box even for that slice of people.

Happy to have access to Kasrkin cheaper than KT.  Just kinda weird this isn't Krieg themed when the Krieg themed is what's the new hotness.

I don’t find it that odd it’s not krieg themed.

i like a few things in the krieg line, but I don’t like the krieg aesthetics. I simply don’t want to have krieg mixed into my army.

the krieg box and kits are for the people that absolutely love the krieg models, not really meant for the general guard playing population.

Like...Krieg is getting the Codex box and a completely new line. They'll want to to stretch the release of that a bit, it would be very unusualy if every single new unit got dropped at the same time, given the amount of them.

Their CP will come later. And this one is a good supplement to the first CP, that's just a fact. Little overlap and completely different unit roles to the first one. All of these are aimed at starters, newbies and casual buyers primarily, and not for long time players to bulk out their big collections.

There won't be a Krieg CP anytime in 10th edition and I doubt it'll show up in 11th unless they do a CP overhaul, which is definitely possible considering how successful Spearhead has been for AoS. Just assuming that they're gonna drop ANOTHER combat patrol for IG seems like a pipe dream. No other faction has gotten a random CP drop post codex.

The old combat patrol will be going away, so not really a supplement to that either. New fans won't have access to that old box after a few months as old stock is bought up. This box forms a poor core to a new IG player that gets into the faction in say, May of next year.

This box does not feel aimed at starters, that's kind of been my complaint for the get go. It's directly aimed at people who bought in at the end of 9th when the faction was refreshed, but didn't buy anything other than the army box. I think that feels a little weird.

Like the previous box, you wanted to expand it it was an obvious; buy some treads or some elite infantry. In this box, you're pushed to buying... Cadians?  That's weird.

I’m not sure RR really compliment the current CP at all.

even if it does, never before have we seen evidence that they replace CPs in order to compliment with new CPs.

CPs fill the introductory box set niche. This new CP is not a very good start to a guard army…unless you just really want a traditional cavalry focused army.

It's not the worst Combat Patrol they could've made.

It could always have been Catachan themed.

I'm a big detractor of the Catachan theme (I don't want Vietnam era US soldiers in my army, purely a style choice), but even THAT would've made more sense for what the nebulous "First thing that comes to mind when I think of the army" that guard embodies for most people.

10 horses and 10 Specialists doesn't really scream "Waves of humanity" that I would think would be most people's first thought of Guard.

Would have been infinitely better if it was basically just a Catachan version of the current CP.

just replace the FOBs with a pair of jungle boi HWSes, and the sentinel is pretty agnostic especially as an armored sentinel.

that would make sooo much more sense, than this dumpster fire of a box set.

if they wanted a non-krieg ‘generic’ CP, a better option would have been castellan, 1 shock trooper squad, leman Russ and HWS.

(very similar to the old start collecting box iirc.)

but since GW seems to be avoiding heavy vehicles/monsters in CPs replacing the the Russ with a second HWS, and Kasrkin would be solid as well.

not overloaded with basic infantry, but still a solid base for a standard imperial guard army.

There's no way a CP, or any release for that matter, is going to happen with the :cuss:ty old Catachans. And it shouldn't be, those models are so damn old and ugly.

Gotta wait until 11th or later for that refresh.

Obviously it would be a bit silly to do Catachans without a refresh, the point being that even Catachans in a basic set up would be a box that makes more sense than the one we got.

this new CP is completely nonsensical, and just seems like they slapped something together completely at random.

Not to mention a terrible introduction into the faction for any new gamers:facepalm:

The current one is pretty all rounded and decent:yes:

Yep, I forget the points value of it, but in general 2 of the current CPs is a very solid start to a guard army.
throw in a dorn, or a Russ, or maybe a pair of chimeras, you have basically everything guard are known for in a 1000ish point army.

2 of the new CP boxes is just super awkward and doesn’t really seem right for anything like a normal guard army.
