I love the design of them and their lore. A shard of the war God Khaine that died fighting off slannesh.

but when I see them get boned by the Ward effect (caligar, Cato for example). I thought they were jokes, like a punching bag until I read the priests of mars novel and saw one absolutely body a Black Templar captain in termy plate. It wasn’t even close,  but are there other novels where they can shine? I was planning on even running an army when I get 2000+ Black Templars.

Valedor has a fairly cool scene where the Eldar think that the Avatar has been destroyed by the Tyranids only for it to erupt from a pile of dead bugs and start slaying again.

Yeah,

Spoiler

after leaving it for about a week in which the Eldar just p-d off to lick their wounds and wonder what to do after their first attack failed.

It is pretty epic, though.

Apparently there's an instance of an Avatar getting up on its own and going walkabout through the webway, just to find some things to hit with its sword. I haven't read that lore, though, and I'm not sure where it's from.

It’s from the Gothic War book Shadow Point.

He wakes himself up and carves a path of destruction across real space/ webway on his way to helping a Aeldari expedition at a crucial point.

There’s also a funny bit where he scares the #%€$ out of a troupe of Harlequins travelling the other direction in the webway

There’s an old three part story from White Dwarf (~#127) that’s very good read where an Eldar army fights a human cultist army. It ends with the Avatar battling a Keeper of Secrets, definitely worth a look.
