LemartesTheLost
Not to keep dragging on the Sicarius discussion, but I just read Solemnity by Kyme in prep for the new Ferren Areios novel coming out later this year. This isn't the review thread, so I won't give you a full one but what I will say is that was a beautiful short. So much so in fact, that now I consider Cato's character arc complete. He's come full circle. Any other writing on him just runs the risk of making that arc regress in some way. I get that this is 40k and we can't have nice things, but short of Sicarius killing Chaos Calgar and/or becoming Chapter Master like @wecanhaveallthree said (Noblebright, much?), I just don't see him doing much that would warrant his own novel. Now that he's respectable Space Marine Captain #678,464, he really doesn't feel all that much different than anybody else except for the fact that Guilliman keeps him around because Thiel was a plucky fellow 10k years ago. darkhorse0607
For what it's worth (and because there's no news to talk about in the desolate wasteland that is BL news) I believe that Kyme agrees with you. I went back and looked at Track of Words interview with Kyme when Knights of Macragge released, he said that "There is an ending of sorts about Sicarius’s tale in this book" and said that if something strikes his fancy later, he might write another Sicarius novel but wasn't planning on it Even though I'd like it, I don't expect a new novel about him, and I would rather he just be in the background rather than it turn into something like the Ventris novels where it's seven novels in and he's largely the same character we met originally in Nightbringer and never really went through the transformation that Sicarius did over his three I guess to circle back, Master of Rites could be great, I am going to get it because I have a duty to the chapter, but it's just a growing frustration from me at least, that GW has done a lot to build up characters over the last thirty years, including a ton just in the Ultramarines, and instead of doing something with them they're introducing more in a premise that sounds meh if I'm being honest, like the old metaphor of just throwing stuff at the wall to see if it sticks. I get that it's how characters get started (i.e. Felix as we have already talked about) but it just adds to my sentiment that there's not a lot of meaningful things coming out (not to beat the "finish the trilogies" drum again) cheywood, Roomsky, Bestkeptsecret and 2 others 1 3 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384814-upcoming-bl-stuff-2025/page/17/#findComment-6107301 Share on other sites
wecanhaveallthree
KYMEEEEEEEEE Yeah, that was definitely the arc when Calgar didn't pop his cork at Vigilus. I still maintain that Calgar 'dying' there, Sicarius being promoted (and using his experience as Guilliman's equerry and newfound perspective to find how to get out of Calgar's shadow and make the Chapter his own, true(r) to the Primarch and then it being revealed Calgar didn't die - building on his sense of despair and dislocation that Dark Imperium explored - but rather fell would have been absolutely KINO. The Ultramarines, the perfect boys with their daddy leading the Imperium losing the 'spiritual liege' to Abaddon? It would have buried Guilliman, it would have totally rocked the foundations of his support, and it just woulda been awesome in general. Sadly, Sicarius has been sent off with a flaccid (but well-written) culmination, he's now a Good Boy (no more of that planet-killing, brother-banishing jealousy that made him interesting, no sir!) Ultramarine #4123. So, as darkhorse says, they must bring on the next one and his tiny, tiny hands. DarkChaplain
Yeah, probably one of the books I'm most interested in this year, and... I guess it'll still be a while before I get to read it, after the spoilers online had time to spread. At least Ushoran is dropping as well. OpossumStrong
Probably another store forgot/hasn't been informed that GW moved the date to July. Anyone thinking about getting any of those? Warhammer 40,000 Character Encyclopedia The Art of Warhammer Video Games Words of War: The Miniature Book of Space Marine Quotes I might get the quotes book, the pages look nice. neOh (AV)
I just went to the BL website and saw there's a new Cult Mechanicus eShorts Week. But unless my memory is failing me, it wasn't announced anywhere — no previews or articles. And the stories sound really promising. So fraters, did I miss the announcement or did they just forget to do one? I'm tempted by the quotes book, depending on the cost. If it's too much then I'll continue to wander around saying "hope is the first step on the road to disappointment" and "I will die on this world" like I already do. I do wish they had used artwork rather than miniature photographs though Also, words cannot express how much I hope that cover style of the Dawn of Fire series goes away after it's done Edited Tuesday at 07:34 PM by darkhorse0607 OpossumStrong 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384814-upcoming-bl-stuff-2025/page/17/#findComment-6108194 Share on other sites

Definitely getting the quotes one. Pocket-sized and £7.99 seems decent to me. Hopefully they expand it to the Inquisition in the future as well. He has rarely let me down. The one from Irons might also be worth a read - their recent (first) story was okay and I’m keen to see if they show any improvement. Don’t recognise the names of the remaining three, so we will see how they go. It simply means BL has been sitting on the finished novel for ages. Long enough that translators actually had enough time to translate it. And very likely the store/distributor of German edition didn't get an update/missed it from BL that they are postponing the release. Lord Marshal
A Corsair novel from Mike Brooks - interesting. And an SoB anthology. Quote Aeldari Corsairs prefer to shirk the responsibilities of their craftworld in order to ply the stars in search of meaning and glory – and no, it’s totally not a phase. For Baron Myrin Stormdawn of the Starsplinters, things are going from bad to worse as a running conflict with Uzgul da Magnificent and his Badskab Buccaneers escalates in an unexpected way. He’s forced into an alliance with Taenar Leotharan, an admiral exiled from their home – the Craftworld Ilmaren. Taenar struggles to adjust to a life of piracy, and the Starsplinters are only as good as their last success and the whims of their capricious commander, Princess Tishria. Mike Brooks pits Aeldari against Orks and internal strife in Voidscarred. Quote With fiery tempers, and even fierier flamers, the Adepta Sororitas are fervent exemplars of the Imperial Creed, purging their foes with faith, fury, and – we can’t stress this enough – lots of fire. Upcoming anthology Paragon of Faith and Other Stories collects two novellas and five short stories about the Battle Sisters. In Paragon of Faith by Amanda Bridgeman, Sister Aenor and her unit mount a desperate defence on a pilgrimage world threatened by menace below the surface. But flickers of self doubt – and overwhelming cultist hordes – complicate matters somewhat. In Saint’s Judgement by Ness Brown, Sister Hospitaller Docia is fighting a less palpable threat, as a deadly plague that twists mind, body, and soul turns her infirmary into a battlefield where only faith can triumph against the infected hordes. The anthology also contains the short stories Infernal Motives by Jude Reid, Our Lady of the Voyage by Kate Flack, Joy of the Martyr by Ness Brown, Redemption Through Blood by John Sollitto and The Fires of Our Faith by Nicholas Werner. cheywood
Voidscarred has me quite excited. I’ve wanted an Eldar Corsairs novel for ages and Brooks is a decent choice. Jareddm
I was disappointed by Lelith Hesperax: Queen of Knives but I also think Brooks was probably more stymied in what he could do in that one.
