Worth getting?

I'll let you know next week when mine gets delivered!

I have had a leaf through when I saw it on a shelf. It does look like a decent book. Plenty of good images, primarily model photography and it's all laid out well, as one would expect from a DK title.

According to FNAC, Chris Wraight has an embargoed book due in October:

Any thoughts on what this could be?

Horus Primarch book?

From Chris Wraight? That would be an interesting choice, to say the least, but not a bad one.
If one writes about Horus I would have guessed Dan Abnett or Graham McNeill

It could also be another book of the HH Character Series and this time a White Scars character, just assumptions though

Quote

READ IT BECAUSE
This is the final instalment of the Horus Heresy – but that was just the beginning of a much darker tale which will be 10,000 years in the telling. These short stories show us glimpses of the stories that spun out of the Siege of Terra as the fledgling Imperium put together the pieces after the galaxy-shattering destruction, and those who fought on both sides, as they try to move on from the unthinkable events of the bloody conflict.

The final instalment of the Horus Heresy (part two).

I imagine it'll be a character book, but I'll scream if it's the Horus Primarch book.

Hmm. Potentially first entry of The Scouring?

That was my first thought as well (and Wraight would be a good pick for that imo)

But the series listing is under the Heresy, so I dunno. Unless its going to be Horus Heresy: The Scouring or they havent created a new SKU tree/listing order for a new series which is always possible.

Could be a character novel though, 366 pages seems longer for that considering his Sanguinius novel was in the 200s

Hate to tamp down on the excitement, but an embargo doesn’t necessarily mean a new book in my experience. This could be a translation of an existing novel. Is the German translation of Sea of Souls out? I’m wondering if that Horus Heresy label is simply incorrect.

As much as I want it to be a character novel about Caipha Morarg, it probably isn't that.
Is it possible that it's an anthology a la Siege of Chthonia, and onlt one contributor is being listed as the author? That happens on a few sites.

Era of Ruin in French or German maybe? That seems a disappointingly likely candidate.

Any non-spoiler initial thoughts on The Silent King?

I'm a little past halfway. So far it's not exactly bowling me over.

I was disappointed to see that Black Library still apparently considers knowledge of their current lore to be an afterthought when it comes to the editors they hire.

I mean, here we are at the wrap-up of their big era-defining multi-author series and the main character (Guilliman) - after ten years of abundance of caution - finally tells the guy who's been a close subordinate since the start of the Terran Crusade and was a major character in book one that his chapter was indeed obliterated (with a tiny handful of survivors) years ago between the actions at Sabatine and Cadia.

Problem: HALF THE CHAPTER was at Vigilus during the War of Beasts! This was an action that took place well after both Sabatine and Cadia and was supposedly of paramount importance to Guilliman. He sent the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines there to spearhead the effort. Yet he's somehow unaware that the White Consuls were one of the most-represented chapters present?

And it's not like the War of Beasts is a concurrent event. Not only is Calgar back on Ultramar and all healed up from his duel with Abaddon by the time of Dark Imperium (which takes place shortly after The Silent King), but Gilly mentions the Sanctus Wall here, something that wasn't in place until after the subsequent War of Nightmares ended.

There would have been simple ways to rectify this, just stating that those elements of the White Consuls present at Vigilus were unfortunately wiped out between the action there and elsewhere (maybe Dharrovar, where at least their presence was stated as being "not impossible" rather than fact.)

Gilly could also have stated that there were "initial" reports of the White Consuls being present at Vigilus, but these turned out to be cruel astropathic mistranslations, fueled in part by a disbelief that no chapter would actually name itself "the Beige Praetors."

Ultimately, I can cut Haley a break for not knowing this (although... is it THAT tough to just Google "White Consuls" and see if maybe they've turned up somewhere in GW's product line, especially in products set in a war zone that's been referenced repeatedly in Dawn of Fire?)

My problem really is... how many more ridiculous mistakes like this in high-profile books need to happen before EITHER knowledge of the current lore OR a basic ability to research same is made mandatory in order to be a Black Library editor? Because clearly the writers aren't going to catch everything and they really shouldn't be expected to.

Maybe a compilation of all of Wraight’s HH White Scars short stories? Although I don’t think there were all that many.

Plus the novella, it could stretch to 336 pages.

Chris Wraight's White Scars arc is possibly the best in the HH series. It helps he had sole authorial input (and he's a great writer), and he came in later on.

Hey guys;

(Very) Long time lurker (been actively reading the forum since 2017), 1st time poster!

Being part of the French Black Library Community and having a friend working at FNAC directly I asked him what he thought of the situation.
Firstly he's saying it could very well be mislabeled, it wouldn't be the first time it'd happen and GW/BL doesn't always provide the correct infos (or at all) on the first try. Meaning it could very well be a 40k/crime book.

Given the weight (505g shown on Amazon) he thinks that it could be the Vaults of Terra omnibus but then the 336 pages count feels waay too low. Alternatively he thinks it might (emphasises on "might") be Watchers of the Throne 3.

However what is 100% sure is that it's not Era of Ruin as it was already released in both French and German in the anthology "Les Flammes de la Trahison"/"Flammen des Verrats" (which also contains Garro: Knight of Grey as it wasn't translated yet).

Same deal with Sea of Souls in German. It was already released quite a few months ago.

I'll keep you guys updated if I do find more infos on this.

Just starting chapter 12. It's fine, so far, nothing too special in terms of main plot. What I loved though was Messinius putting down a rebelling world that embraced the horrors of... democracy. No Chaos plot, no Genestealers, just the Imperium stamping out people trying to do good.

So actually I didn't expect to get news that quickly but turns out I did, I guess praying to the Dark Gods has some benefits, Gloria Aeterna as some grey/red lunatics would say.

The first thing is that Amazon.fr, -for a brief amount of time- had a 2nd book with the exact same format (12.9 cm x 19.8 cm) under embargo. This time from John French. Curiously you couldn't find it again unless you had previously added it to your Amazon wishlist.
This time around for december 3rd. Also labelled as "Horus Heresy".

John-French.jpg

Regarding the Horus Heresy label/collection it is indeed "officially" the correct label - I went through most of the french library shops, directly asked them and they confirmed it wasn't a mistake.

To summarize:

  • We have two books under embargo
  • One by Wraight, one by French
  • Both are 12.9 x 19.8 cm so it rules out any Horus Heresy Primarchs (or Horus Heresy Characters) hardbacks which are 13.5 x 20.5 cm.
  • One is releasing on October 29th, the second one on December 3rd.
  • They both weight 505g yet they don't have the same amount of pages: 336 for Wraight's and 400 for French's.
  • They both are labelled "Horus Heresy" - the more I think about it the more I have this nagging feeling that we might get The Horus Heresy: The Great Scouring
  • Both Amazon.fr and Fnac.com list them for 15 euros (premium hardbacks are usually 25 bucks).
